MR Bungle Europe has been very silent. After all I don't see many other european nations doing the UN"s work. Moo the job that ship was doing was in connection with UN mandates, not US policy. Yea can not say the UN is in line with US policy, far from it.Glad they are coming home
Geeze why don;t we just brick the placeup and let them go about killing each other until they figure its all BS and a waste of time?
But I guess the west will be blamed for that as well

Goose, I am amazed at your ability to discount the hurts that the western/ Christian countries have layed on the Arabs and Persians for centuries, you sound like Tony Blair insisting that current British foreign policy has had no part in stirring up the present hatred for us, in the Middle East.

Didn't we go to Iraq to support the American war? Even the Canadians had the balls say stick it.
Lets face it, Blair is no Harold Wilson, who under great pressure from that pratt Johnson, would't let British troops go a kill Vietnamese people.

londonsquare not discounting what the UK done in the past. Thats the past, not now.
People should stop kicking back to stuff that happened a 100/1000 yrs ago, suppose we should still be pissed at the romans then. This is the here and now.
Don't see the middle east having a go at the Turks. As a whole the middle east was only ever united under one leader and that was Saladine.
People need to learn from history not be feel like now is a good time to get revenge cuz the Brits or whomever attacked and killed some great great great uncle or something.

Goose, I'm talking about a continuum, right up to today. Surely l can go back as far as I personally can remember?
In 1953, MI6 and the CIA, arranged the overthrow of Dr. Mossadeq's democratically elected government and and put the Shah in power. They supported him even though his secret police were cruelty personified. When the country was going into revolution, Carter withdrew support for the Shah.
In the Iraq-Iran war, the USA provided intelligence and material support for Iraq. This is not long after the Iranians took the US embassy, so it isn't surprising.
In 1988, USS Vincennes, operating inside Iranian territorial waters, shot down an Iranian Airbus killing 290 passengers. They claimed they thought it was a fighter coming to attack them!!!! Radar could tell the difference between a big airliner and a fighter, long long before that, and the airliner's transponders were on. Us Naval records still say there was hostile iranian action against a ship in international waters. The crew were awarded battle stars!
In 2000, a new president of the USA, described an axis of evil, N. Korea, Iran and Iraq. He then invented an excuse to attack the weakest of the three. It should be no surprise that the other two went balls-to-the-wall to get a nuclear deterent, wouldn't you?
USA is leading the charge to prevent Iran from refining uranium, "because they are a nation that supports terrorism". The Iranians "know" that this is a lie, a device to keep them unprotected, so America can attack at will.
At this time, The USA and cohorts, cover what looks to be 80 to 90% of Irans borders, with Iraq, Afghanistan and perhaps even Pakistan, and they have two carrier battle groups in the gulf. These carrier groups went into a noisy, chest thumping exercise when the Brits were taken. I think it didn't help, it stiffened the Iranian position.
Five Iranians went into Iraq, with the knowledge of the "Sovereign" Iraqi government, on a "diplomatic mission", they were taken by the US army and held incommunicado.
It is stated administration policy to feed money to dissident groups in Iran, with a view to [strike]overthrowing the government[/strike] "oops, regime change sounds so much nicer.
You are correct in saying it was hundreds of years ago, trouble is, it's still happening.

It is also worth noting that Israel, America's proxy (or is that the other way around?), and Iran's sworn enemy, is the only nuclear armed country in the middle east and has made it clear that it will do what ever is necessary to keep it that way. With the conivance of the US and the EU, Israel has (German built) submarines armed with nuclear and non-nuclear armed cruise missiles.
As LSQ points out, Iran now has US troops on at least two of its main borders and a US fleet betwee it and the open sea. Needless to say they have legitimate reasons to feel insecure. Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get you...

londonsquare. You cannot just blame all this PS on the west, surely it involved other countries foreign policies.
As for the atomic bomb argument. I guess when people say that america used the first atomic bomb and weapons of mass destruction makes it ok for others to try and get and use.
facts are the British invented the concentration camp, Germans used the first chemical weapons and japanese created and used first biological weapons.. The fire bombing of japan killed more people than dropping the bomb did.
Has Israel coursed problems in the middle east, yep sure has. have they helped themself, some ways no. The fact that they were so put through the grind, they of all people should understand how the palestinian people feel.
Given all that, if they gave everyone, everything they wanted, would things change no, cuz they will then blame some other group .
The fact the Irans leaders have said they want to wipe you out, feels you with confidence that they really won't.
Brick the whole place up, let them sort it out, don't involve everyone else and move on lol.

Goose, there are other countries involved, the Sunni countries don't want Iran to grow strong, but they are not threatening with forces around the border and powerful war fleet on the doorstep. They are not the ones pushing for more and more sanctions.
I try not to think in terms of good or evil for they are tied in with religion; I try to think in terms of beneficial and detrimental behaviour, survival of the fittest applies. Imagine yourself to be the Great Leader of Iran, trying to bring your country through, under the pressures and threats being applied by the USA. It reminds me, in some ways to the problems that faced Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. They did things that appeared quirky and strange to the rest of Europe, to keep them off balance
Many animals, including humans, have displays of ferocity that they use to intimidate potential attackers, countries utilise the same methods.
Again, imagine that you are trying to steer Iran through the problems enumerated in this thread. See how secure you feel. Do you dare stop your quest for a deterrent, remember, the looney toons running the USA, has already attacked and brought chaos to one of the members of the "axis of evil", right on your border, and another country, with justification on your other border.
