The dems have hardly crasp control of the house by a few months and are already talking TAX increases .

do you really think the increased tax on tabacco wil relieve the cost of health care on the poor .if it even schuduled for that perpose how long wil it be before it gets diverted to pay for something else as always happens .

Why should the cost be levied on smokers anyway . ???

They have no choice with the irresponsible financial mismanagement of the administration. The country is falling apart with government cutbacks and the deficit.

Also, its a Republican who is proposing to increase cigarette taxes anyway...

And a vote was likely Friday on a bid by Sen. Gordon Smith (news, bio, voting record), R-Ore., to put lawmakers on record in favor of increasing taxes on tobacco to pay for a big boost in a popular program providing health insurance for children from poor families

It'll be interesting to watch how it'll sold and attacked. $900 billion extra expenditures is, after all, the biggest tax increase in history - but then every state government is broke. I've noticed some right of centre commentators comparing it to Clinton's $250 billion hike in 1993 which was seen as too much by Bubba himself. But then Democrats get to talk about the 90s which are seen as some sort of Utopian money-mad decade now.
