I blame the Reagan administration for systematically dismantelling the mental health care in, firstly, California, and then the rest of the country.

All to support a totally bankrupt ideology. They sold it under the euphemism of 'fiscal responsibility' and the gullible and idiotic public lapped it up with abandon, not realizing that it was in all but a few cases against their and their families self interest. It was a hell of a marketing job.

Now though, I believe that with the failure of Reganomics, supply-side economics, trickle down-theory, Laffer curve and religious bigotry that are the cornerstones of American conservatism, is now totally discredited set of ideas. Only a few small minded and stubborn idiots would even give this type nonsense a second look these days.

... or, the second and third generation mentally ill that were turned out by Reagan in the first place!

Minnesota (where I live) enacted a "right to carry" handgun law, several years ago. Since that time - violent crime has gone down. I have no idea if the two statistics are related. The number of "right to carry" permits has not gone up appreciably, but perhaps criminals are more apprehensive that their prospective victims might be packing.

This is what I wonder too. It annoys me no end that you literally have to trawl through the tiniest news articles nationally any time a person legally shoots a criminal - yet at a local level, they are covered and I can clearly see where I live that homeowners have the absolute right to shoot intruders, without fear of prosecution.

NRA publish stories like this in their magazine each month - I used to look them up to see if they were made up but they are not. They even publish stories about people that simply produced a weapon and didn't even need to discharge it - I wonder how many times that has deterred an attack or robbery?

It just goes on and on. I don't think its the guns, it seems to me that uncaring and bureaucratic nature of American officialdom creates a frustratingly alienating experience. It might well be that because it is totally an immigrant country with no ethnic or grand-cultural cohesion, that empathy and compassion are difficult for Americans.

And yet by electing somebody to the white house who believes in MORE GOVT RUNNING AND ORGANIZING of our lives you will get more and more of these bureaucrats springing up from under the woodwork all over the country .
