But why they more prone to this type of mass killing? It happens in other countries but not on the scale and frequency as in the US. Either its the easy access to weapons or its a social physiological problem with that country. Personally I think it’s that they are more alienated from each other than in other societies. All that individualism, caring about themselves breeds a social psychosis that can, and does, manifest into random mass killings.

Yes I think it is probably a bit of both - disenfranchisement and the "any old idiot can get hold of a gun" thing.

You could probably lay the blame at the door of several, almost seemingly unrelated facets of American culture - reality TV, the expectation that everyone should be a winner, everyone's feelings of entitlement, the jocks/nerds culture from high school (which exists beyond there as well) and the pure hatred that bubbles under the surface of many groups or communities.

The ultimate blame lies with people though, not with the weapons.

Very true. But people without weapons, or with less deadly weapons, are less likely to kill and kill with such appalling efficiency.

having access to weapons is only one factor in this kind of thing, and it takes certain types to snap in this particular way. we're always reading horror stories from the uk of people being beaten to death or stabbed/slashed etc. americans just have a very particular way of snapping, a way thats perfect to be reported by the swarming news media. alot of times you see these guys either having posted videos of themselves before their spree, or posing for photo's, and the media plays right along with it. used to be in the uk that kind of thing would be censored, but recently they seem to be playing the game along with Fox news etc. this country is so huge that this stuff seems to happen far too frequently, but its always happened. its just reported more now. where can you go that you won't find headlines & editorial raving being pumped out at you?
This week was the 50 year mark since Ed Gein was arrested up in Plainfield for murder and several other gruesome crimes. Can you imagine Fox or one of the other networks getting hold of the story? For people in Plainfield its still a really sensitive area, and not something talked about too much. Watching the tactless, blanket coverage of this recent massacre on the tv I was struck by the way they had to interview as many people as possible and plaster them all over the report. Shocked and frightened people too scared to decline an interview. A feeding frenzy of newsmedia.
You can be famous too... shock roll
I agree with Servalan. The media plays right along with it and although it wouldn't admit it, welcomes events like these and hypes it further.

I don't care about the names, faces etc. Just report the facts and events and move on media. The circus that accompanies anything the networks now deem newsworthy is quite sickening.

Can they do nothing right?

You still any good with one? They're dirt cheap at my local store, like $99.99.

Millions on sale in the local Kmart type stores in Canada in the early '60's @ $ 15 can. each. :-?

My last remark to this thread was just facetious. The remark pertained to the gun lobbyists and the real reason that any Tom Dick and Harry can walk into a store and buy a semi-automatic - money.

However, now we have had another malcontented youth in this state go and gun more people down in church. The first shooting in Arvada happened just six miles away from my house - link below;

I'm quite sure the problem is cultural. There seems to be very little if any respect for ones fellow human being in the USA, and that is the reason I dislike living in this country.
Move up Canada, you might not be able to afford that third SUV, extra large hot tub or candy floss machine but its nice here. Oh, and think of all the money you save on health care and college tution. They have no death penalty either.
Or you could move to Britain. You may not be able to afford a car, to take a bath or go to the fair but it does rain an awful lot. And think of all the money you could waste on atrocious healthcare and paying off everyone elses university debts. There's no death penalty either, though you'll wish there was.

OK, OK, point taken.

Money saving tips from my mother;

"It's green not to flush the toilet every time. I get by on a flush a day"
"We used to cut up squares of newspaper for toilet roll after the war"
"I save money on my heating bills by stopping with you or your brother for weeks at a time"

Almost in the realm of Viz "Top Tips" there! D

The shooter was from a devout Christian upbringing and had been home schooled - I guess they really didn't work out for him either.

Just heard that he used to be part of the Missionary school but got a rejection.

I think they should explain to these kids that self mutilation is far more acceptable and honored than taking out innocent bystanders, only cowards do that, no manners, that's the problem. wink
