you mean like this?

why don't you look at overal death rate, rather than by a particular item as cause of death. As someone has said, if you have not got a gun yea find another way to dispatch someone.

What makes you say that? It is possible to have both a left-wing outlook and own guns.

Just for the record. JohnA seemed to interpret my last post here as against gun control.

I am actually passionately FOR gun control. It's possible to look at and discuss the weaknesses of countries' efforts to control guns and still be for those controls.

I think the prevalence of guns in the U.S is insane and I'm pretty sure that the constitutional right to bear arms would be rapidly re-written if the founding fathers could see the consequences wreaked by guns in modern America and the deadly technology of automatic weapons.

QUOTE

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean, who had been a critic of some forms of gun control during his tenure as governor of Vermont, has urged candidates to view gun control laws as state issues, allowing those in rural states to reflect the values of hunters and others hostile to gun control, while supporting restrictions in urban areas with serious crime problems.

I was making a note how a thread about a mulitple shooting started to make comments about gay people.

It does seem back on track now though.

sidetrack by way of a spelling mistake.

FOr what its worth (and I really don't have time to raid my wife's laptop for the statisitics) gun crime in the UK has actually declined over the past few years (the high point was in 01, 02 or 03, can't quite recall which).
Violent crime rates are also far lower in England and Wales than in the US. This is particularly the case for gun crime - less so for crimes involving knives - for obvious reasons.
However, property crimes are significantly higher in England and Wales than in the US, particularly auto thefts.
One could speculate that this is a reflection of the comparative expense of car ownership in England and Wales.

Personally I doubt UK style gun control is viable in the US or desirable. However it is important to note a significant difference in types of gun crime between the two jurisdictions.
In England and Wales the sort of random mass shooting that Moo's OP mentions are extremely rare. I beleive that strict gun controls are the reason for this. Likewise it is rare for children to have access to guns and thus school shooti ngs are extremely rare in the UK. By contrast stabbings at school in England and Wales are disturbingly frequent.

To my mind 'gun control' has become an absurd debate in the US. In some states it is harder for a person to get a driving license than it is to access a firearm. To my mind similar (but not the same)regulations should apply - there are certain people we simply do not want behind a wheel - either because of their criminal back ground (e.g. drunk driving) or health (a blind man can't drive lawfully but can shoot a gum with impunity). It does not seem unreasonable to apply similar standards to gun ownership.
Finally. There is not constitutional right to bear arms. If there was the NRA would have sued Massachusetts and other gun control states long ago. They haven't. They won't. They know they would lose and this hoary old chesnut would be history.

That bit in the Second Amendment about the militia? if you have to register for Selective Service you can get called up. Ergo you need to be familiar with the weapons you will be using.
