Full Version: Should the Cougars have been shot?

I just read this article and firstly agree that the wife was indeed a very brave lady but as it went on to say how 2 animals were shot I feel why should this have happened.

Surely this is just natural instinct of a wild cat and it was guarding its territory. I know its great to go hiking and see the wildlife but aren't we trespassing on their land??

What do you think?

The cougar in question should be relocated. But we as humans have to understand that as we make in roads into the wild animals ranges, then more and more encounters will happen.

Exactly!

Quote:
wardens tracked down and killed a pair of lions near the trail where the attack happened.

Why? Do they think they've "got the taste for humans" now, or something?

Quote:
The dead cougars are undergoing tests to determine if either was responsible for the mauling.

So not only did they kill them, they don't even know it was the riight ones. ?

That's worse than the DP -at least humans get a trial before they're killed rather than afterwards!

Monster most animals attack when they feel threatened or to old to take normal prey. makes me laugh really when we tell places like afica etc to protect animals etc, but soon as the local cats bring down some cattle etc they want to kill it here.

Again that 2 faced things shows its face

Yes, I know how it is, but (a) it doesn't make it right, and (b) they killed before they knew they had the right ones.

Hate to hear that althought i dont think the animals suffered at all .

the truth is though as said before once they taste human flesh they cannot be trusted not to seek it out again .

same thing with dogs one bite is forgiven 2 bites they are authenized .. hate to hear it though .. not fair i agree .

all of the cat family are bueatifull creatures pure hunters ....examples of grace , power and agility .
This does seem odd for N.Cal. Here we usually dart them and move them whilst asleep further into the wilderness. ( Can you imagine how they feel when they wake up, not knowing where they are, ) I guess the ferocity of the attack stirred too many emotions. I know they shot a big cat in Palo Alto and everyone was up in arms. It didn't do anything, just took a nap in a tree and some young blood cop shot it. After that they had to dart them. Mind, Humbolt County, pot head state. I guess they're all on hair triggers up there.
OK, so I've googled the "taste for human blood" thing, and all I can find is the same as we see here -discussion boards where someone asserts the "fact" that they get a taste for human flesh, but I can't find any documentation on this phenomenon. Anyone got any? Or is it a myth that has been repeated so often without question that many believe it to be true?

/loves caption cat pictures
//I have lots of them
This taste for blood stuff has not been proven at all. Its just a way we can feel better cuz we got revenge.

Most proven cases of big cats turning out to be man eaters, shows the cats involved were old and unable to catch or take down there normal prey. They then closer to human habitation for easier food source, maybe a goat, cow, dog or cat they then begin to get used to seeing humans around other prey species and we then become prey as well. But animals attack humans for many ,many different reasons.
Defending their young, protecting their kill etc etc etc. The list is long.
90% of all so called shark attacks are not attacks in the classic sense, but due to people mucking around with the shark before the shark turns and bites them. I bet most snake bites are the same. People think they are Steve Irwin and try catching them by the tail.

A more normal way of looking at this is with your own cat, yep suddenly its on your lap wanting some loving and attention, purring away, but sometimes it turns and bites and scratches you for no apparent reason. Do we rush out to put it down cuz its drawn blood, course not.

dont know about you but none of my cats has ever done that .

they have a few times stratched me when ive been playing and dangled something for them to jump for and not moved my hand quick enough when they are in the air ....

I have no proof of this but I was always told never feed a pet cat milk if you want it to mouse or rat. Apparently the milk does something to the glands and they don't hunt after that.
Needless to say our cat is a continual mouser and often brings us "presents", yet she will watch birds for hours and shows no interest in chasing them. In fact one year she made friends with Orville and Wright, that fat and thin doves born in the hanging basket. They'd waddle up to her on the spa top and she'd just shake her head, get up and walk away. Mind, show her a rat, and she's in heaven, I on the other hand am in hysterics, there's nothing worse than a half dead rat.
Oh and yes, she bites, she's 17 now and at times gets very irked if we disturb her short 18 hour naps. lol
