What a lovely surprise!

My birthdays are not well noted - one card from best friend, and another from new work colleagues, and nothing from family! Champers and choccies instead!

We are still very happy here in the UK. We settled into normal life very quickly. DH became a UK citizen in November, having been here 3 years.

The hardest expat thing we have had to deal with is the death of MIL, and we weren't all able to go for the funeral so DH went by himself. We've since had two family weddings in the US that only DH has gone to, but on the plus side, FIL came to stay with us last summer and got completely hooked on Ashes Cricket (good job he wasn't visiting this Christmas).

We had a brief brush last weekend with going back to the US (life in an American company abroad). I had everything picked. DH was horrified at the lifestyle switch - moving from gritty UK town to mansion the middle of nowhere wasn't appealing to him. Anyway, it's all fallen through for the time being, except that I managed to get some Eastern Europeans in to do up the house from top to bottom should we ever need to sell in a hurry.

I am now working as a science teacher doing short term contracts (eg maternity leave) and daily supply. It's working out as I want to keep my options open until the perfect job arrives in my lap.

In the last few days we have booked our summer holiday. We are going to the US for the first time in four years. Our family has a reunion on Cape Cod every year, so we are going to do that (we went for the first and last time in 2000). We are spending 3 days with family and then heading off to a resort in Vermont - http//www.smuggs.com - where they have activities galore and lots of children's programmes. With the exchange rate, it's a good time to go for it.

Thanks again for the birthday wishes - I will try to be a more active participant. I loved this board for a good couple of years, and have very fond memories of some threads. Anyone remember Fur?
Hi Jo,

Shhhh......don't mention fur shock lol

Glad to hear you're settled back in the UK and that your husband has 'briticized' well.

Cape Cod and Vermont will be lovely in the summer.

Good to hear from you,

Jan
