I saw this and wondered how different this is historically. Given the history of empire, do fewer brits live abroad now that, say, 50 years ago?
Also, does this figure include those who are British citizens, but not expats (my kids for example, or British citizens by virtue of being born in overseas dependancies).
The other thing that I was surprised at was that the larged number of expats was in Australia. I know that there are many Brits there, but OZ has a comparatively small population - I wonder just what percentage of the Australian population is British?

I've been enjoying the Have Your Say forum on the BBC website regards this - lots of "I blame immigrants - I'll be voting UKIP/BNP now" hysteria, or "Bloody Blair is to blame for this" stuff.

The breakdowns are interesting. There are about as many Brits living in Canada as in the U.S, but proportionately of course the U.S has ten times the population.
Surprised how far ahead Australia and Spain are.

Also entertaining is the Telegraph message board.

Although I think it says more about the readers of the Telegraph than anything else.

I was shocked at some of these findings. Also enjoyed reading people's comments.
Wonder what % return home and then leave again because its not the home they had left x amount of years ago.

I like the guy in the Telegraph thread who said he felt so safe walking around Moscow at night. Either he lives in a gated community or he means Moscow, Iowa.
