As a permanent resident card holder (through marriage) who has to return back to the U.K. for work for a while (couple of years min) can anyone advise how I can maintain my Greencard? I've heard that I must return to the U.S for a minimum of 24hrs once or twice a year?

Become a citizen.....not.
Joking aside, a work colleague chose to become a citizen for exactly that restriction.
Take US citizenship retain your UK status .
This way you get the best of both worlds being able to vote here ( and help decide who next fucks you and the country ) , and return to UK any time you wish
