More problems for britains health service .
Gee hospitals have even been asked to balance there books. What a low blow and from a labour govt how about that ?
The Conservatives calculate that 20,000 jobs have been cut as a result of Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt's demand that hospitals "balance their books" by the end of the current financial year.

Forgive me for laughing at the misspelling of that particular word!
Wasn't it the Tories whom employed the 20,000 pen pushers in the first place?
more administrators than doctors and all that?
Considering the NHS is the largest employer in Europe I'm sure it ain't too bad. 1.4 million people is alot of people. I like the fact that only the Chinese Army and the Indian Railway system have more employees, and considering the populations of those two countries take up 2/5 of the world population you could say the NHS probably needs a little trimming.

You need to consider the depth and breadth of the organization.
Aside from medical staff, there are the ancilaary workers and admin side. Also, unlike pretty much any othe rsystem, the NHS also provides emergency ambulances, patient transport and all the mechanics etc to keep the vehicle on the road.
The NHS also has a fleet of aircraft (mostly helicopters).
However all of this is broken down into regions and districts.
If you rolled together all those elements of the US system, you'd find it has more staff per capita than the NHS. Also, in the US, unlike the UK - the admin staff outnumber the medical staff. This primarily because all US medical providers need an army of people to prepare bills and collect debts.
By contrast the NHS, imperfect as it is, is a model of effiency.

Yep.
John Major's hair brained so called reforms created several more layers of 'management' - almost all of which had no background in healthcare - by design.
