I've found it hard to get an answer to this, hope you can help..

If you are eligible for naturalis(z)ation, do you have to physically live in the US while the application (N400) is in process?

Cheers smile
If you are eligible for naturalization, you are presumably a greencard holder. That being the case, you are free to live anywhere as long as you are not out of the United States for a whole year or more. Since the application process can take up to a year, where you live should not be an issue, but if you are out of the country you have to be in a position to be able to get to your interview and citizenship ceremony - They tell YOU when and where, not the other way around!

Thanks for that.

I do have a green card (issued 96). Do you feel it would be better to give a US (friends) address or is it safe to give a UK one?

If you were being sent to the UK to work, on a temporary basis, I would not see a problem with giving them a UK address, but it would be wise to check with them first.
Hi Steveo,

I think this is a question its worth paying an immigration lawyer to answer. Did you use one for your Green card?

It would be a real shame to loose this chance for citzenship over a technicality such as giving a UK address or being out of the country for too long etc.

We won't look seriously into going home until we have our American passport in our sticky little paws and therefore know we can always come back if we decide we miss the states.
To all those blue passport seekers, please be aware of a CRUCIAL factor in deciding to take up US citizenship

YOU WILL BE TAXED ON YOUR WORLDWIDE INCOME!!!

This holds true even if you never set foot back in the country. Yes, you may say, how will the IRS know. Well, they probably won't so long as you NEVER intend on living in the US. If you do, then as soon as your Social Security # pops back in the system, the IRS will be alerted. Also, if you renew your passport outside the US, you will be required to sign a form saying that you have complied with the US Tax filing requirements. The penalty for failing to do so is Prison/10k fine/and potential tax liens against your property.

Also, note, that if you are a youngish male, you will be required to sign up for the draft. This means you could, in the future, be required to fight for Uncle Sam.

You should also be aware, that having a US passport does not automatically qualify your children for US citizenship. And even if you do apply for them, they too will be subject to all of the above.

Please note I am not a Tax attorney or know all the detailed Tax Accounting, but know more about this than the average Joe.
