Various foods have been added to the British repetoire, in the years since I left. Only a few people ate curry, now it is the No. 1 national food. I know what curry is, my mother was one of the few. But I keep seeing references to "Donner Kebabs". I know kebabs, but in the picture contest in the jokes and games board, the picture looks as though a tortilla is being prepared, and that ain't a kebab.
So what is a Donner Kebab?
In a nutshell, a kebab shop or van will heat a hunk of lamb in front of what looks like a storage heater. They cut thin slices off, put them in a pitta wrap with some salady bits, chillies and chilli sauce of your choosing, you pay, eat and then throw it up a little while later with your beers.
Great end to a Saturday night......
Thanks, they were popular here back in the eighties, but under a different nam, one that I can't remember at the moment. They were at greek owned cafes.

They were called kebabs.
No, kebabs are pieces of meat and or vegetables on skewers, or have been here.
Just remembered, they were called Gyros. The meat was on a vertical spit and heated from the side. They cut thin slices off it.
In North America, they're often called Shwarmas, which I believe is a more Middle Eastern name for much the same thing.
here they're called..... gyros.
But they don't taste nuffink like they did back home cry
Indeed, Shwarma is the word used in Israel. The "kebab" part refers, I think, to the method the meat is cooked....on the skewer that rotates.
Döner kebab = Same thing as a Greek gyro (pronounced like 'euro')
Shish kebab = Pieces of meat and other stuff on a spit
There's a Greek place just down the road from me where they serve Gyros. In certain parts of the US you can't go a block without seeing one - Chicago for example.
A Donner kebab is a meat dish based on a dare that culinary terrorists sell almost exclusively to drunkards and students. Basically it consists of a cat that has been harpooned in a back alley, slowly spun (to tempt flies towards it) until most of the hair falls off, then scabby bits of it are shaved off into a pita slice. They were invented by street-sweepers and road cleaners who wanted guaranteed work - this can be seen by the enormous piles of it that are immediately dropped outside the shop that it was bought in. It is thought that junk mail agencies employ street-sweepers to identify kebab-users by following the numerous piles of vomit back to their houses - the thought being anyone dumb enough to repeatedly buy such a toxic pile of puke would be silly enough to buy things like a commemorative china plate with Princess Diana riding a horse on it.

A little piece of heaven.
