Bungle, WRT utility bills...don't they produce them quarterly over there? You'll have to hang on another few weeks for your first ones then...remember the jobsworth attitude??!!! roll lol

Yeah you can pay them all kinds of ways but I didn't choose quarterly. What is annoying me is that I haven't receieved a single thing at all - not a welcome pack or acknowledgement that I'm a customer. Nothing. So when I call and ask about my accounts the first thing they ask is for a number which I don't have. After calling BT several times for a bil lthey notified me that they had signed me up for internet billing for an extra charge which means I don't ever get a paper bill. I hadn't asked for that at all. It's now been 2 or 3 weeks since that phone call and I'm still waiting. They just seem inept in comparison that's all.
Maybe give OFTEL a call and see what happens. It's their job to regulate them...make 'em work!

Sorry you're having such a frustrating time....it really isn't much better here y'know, only they load up the shit with high fructose corn smarm so you end up warm and fuzzy even if you're pissed off!! lol

I'm so jealous!!! You've come and gone and I'm still stuck. As you know its the job situation that is our problem, I could get a job easily but being the unqualified pleb that I am it wouldn't have a salary that would come even close to paying a mortgage.

I think we are resigned to the fact that S is now unemployable back home, for whatever reason, age, skills, experince, he never gets any response to his UK job applications. I think its probably mainly his age and the fact that his particular industry doesn't really exist anymore back home, so he has to apply for jobs slightly out of his field. Financially we just couldn't take the risk of moving back without a job so here we stay.

Never mind there are worse things than living in the US - right?? ;)

Seriously, for me its not that I hate living in the US by any means its just that I prefer so many things about the UK. If I didn't know any different then I'd probably be much more content here. IF we ever manage to move back there are lots of thing I will miss about the US after 12 years I do have some affection for the place.

Anyway, despite my horrific case of jealousy I am really happy for those of you who wanted to go back and have done so and good luck to those who are in the process of planning the move . . . . . . . you bastards!

We have finally decided to move back to the UK, been here 10 years, love it, but I had two babies and my perspective on life has changed. We have thought of moving back for years, this time we are just going to do it, rent the house out, put our stuff in storage for a couple of years and see how we like it. Hopefully we will be able to decide where we really want to be! Its now or never, and my US hubby really wants to see what its like... We are moving back Feb 07.

One other thing I'd note is the price of pet stuff. Dog and cat food, and cat litter is absurdly expensive. Even the litter tray (with a lid and door) was £30. I mean come on - it's a shit box for goodness sake.

Well they have introduced an ageism law there, but I am not sure how effective it will be. I have kept in touch with my former UK employer (Bank Of America) and as of last week still have a standing invite to go back to work with them...which is nice.

That's great. I worked for an American company in UK also before here and had a similar offer but sadly, the company got bought out by an Indian a few years back and he outsourced almost everything. I could maybe get something there through friends that stayed and are now managers but it's a last resort really.

Hopefully that's the case. When we went back for my sisters wedding I was still horrified to see that it was okay to advertise for people between certain ages, even though it's quite possible that similar sorts of vetting happens here the fact that it's advertised is/was and always has been something that irked me.

Well before you disappear we all need to get together at some point (and before my season starts up again...)

Yeah but one (possible) downside of the ageism law is that some fear that "experience" will become a hotly contested issue. For example, preference in hiring someone with 15 years mechanical engineering experience over a recent graduate may be considered ageist. Dunno how I feel about it but it does seem odd to contest that as an age bias. There are also court cases regards people feeling it unfair that their starting wage is lower than that of someone who has 10 years at the company but is in the same position.

Just as an Addendum I've cancelled Talk Talk now after so many cock ups and messing about that I just can't take it anymore. The last straw was still not giving my phone plan, but had me as a billed customer from a date I didn't have any service. Their argument was that the line was "active" (as they call it) as I was being billed through Talk Talk, but that I just didn't have the ability to call anybody with it yet. Genius. Add that the broadband was over a month late, they still had no idea when I would get it. Awful awful product and service. So awful in fact that it's been all over the news as being shite, and Orange and Vodafone have withdrawn selling their products through the Carphone Warehouse (who run Talk Talk) because it is an "inept" company. Ouch...and the Orange PR person said that on the 6 o'clock news!

It's not this that is the problem.

It's not wanting to hire someone that has experience, preferring to hire someone straight out of school for half the price.

You won't see many advertising "inexperienced worker".

Although I can imagine they would still flavour the ad towards what they want: "Ideal out-of-school career starter" or something like that.
