Last Life in the Universe
In the IMDB message boards for this film there is a thread entitled "Describe this movie without using the words beautiful or breathtaking", which is quite a quite a challange as they are the most apropos adjectives.
It's a love story, but not soppy or romantic, about a Japanese man in Thailand and a Thai woman he begins a relationship with. The writing, direction and cinematography are a collaboration of Japanese, Chinese and Thai, actors are Japanese and Thai so a complete non Hollywood feel to it, which is always a big plus IMHO.
For those to whom it matters it's R rated (in the US) there is one explicit sex scene and some violence
