I maybe a little slow on the uptake but has anyone else noticed the obvious here that some of the live weekend Premiership game coverage has changed?
FSC is no longer showing the early Saturday morning 0745 (EDT) Premiership game, and is now being shown on the Setanta Channel. There's a live game now at 1000 AM on FSC and they are still showing the live game at midday and the delayed game at 0230 PM. There is now a live game at 11AM on a Sunday morning instead of the PPV and FSC is still showing the live game on a Monday afternoon.
I took a quick look at the Directv site and my own cable (Warner) provider and I see that theyre not offering PPV Premiership games anymore on either site, so I presume that Setanta and FSC are sharing the bulk of the Premiership coverage now. I got to admit the Setanta Channel is looking really tempting.
So when was all this coverage carved up and more importantly why?
Anyone else have any insights/opinions about this?
My guess is, the domestic coverage changed so Setanta and FSC get the appropriate share through their affiliations with Sky, ITV or BBC.
It was announced around August 5th I think. Fox Sports sublicensed a lot of games to Setanta.
Basically, no more PPV games on cable (Comcast etc.)
Puts Setanta in the driving seat for a push to DishNetwork and possibly cable although any time I've asked Comcast about it, they pretend to be interested but clearly are not (yet!)
Anyway, this is the basics of what occurred:
Friday, Setanta Sports announced they'll have exclusive rights to show more than 90 live Premiership matches on North American TV during the 2006/2007 season.
Starting August 19th, Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta will be sharing matches. Setanta will show the 7:30am ET match on Saturdays. At 10am ET, Fox will show one match, while Setanta will show a different Prem match. Then at Noon and 3pm, Fox will show their matches.
On Sundays, Setanta will be showing the 8:30am ET match, while Fox will show the 11am ET one.
Fox will show Monday matches, when available, at 3pm ET, while Setanta will show one or more midweek matches (while Fox may show some mid-week matches), too.
Makes better sense to the fan to pay $12 for a month's worth of games than $20-25 for a single one.
Just need everyone else to get access to Setanta now. I'm happy with DirecTV myself, but it's not an option for some. Keep calling your cable company.
The changeover means though that England v Andorra is not on ANYWHERE.
Still waiting for FSC to update their weeks and view next week's schedule to see if the Macedonia game is on there. Setanta doesn't have it.

I thought that FSC were going to show the game but unfortunately its on PPV via In Demand. Well I suppose looking on the bright side it is available to watch

So do you think this have anything to do with Sky losing the monopoly on Premiership coverage?
I suspect Fox and Sky (even though they are one and the same ultimately) bid for separate packages (US/world rights as opposed to just UK or European broadcast rights) but I don't have the details to hand.
There were quite a few packages when I looked last year and you can't buy worldwide rights - they prefer to sell to each area individually for obvious reasons.
