Hi all,

I'm still lurking about and miss you all.

I've got excited as someone told me I could reclaim all my social security payments now I've left the US. Since we're planning to a buy a house in London every little helps.

However, an accountant I know in the US says I have to wait until I'm 65. Anyone know anything more about this?

Cheers

CR
I know that a Korean friend I used to work with didn't pay any SS contributions since he was here on an H1B so was not a 'permanent' resident, so I think temporary residents do not have to pay Social Security.
Not sure what the question is but i dont think the us refunds any S/S Payments until you retire then you quality for a pension according to how much cash you * put in the pool *
Same goes for UK i get a check from both UK and US since i paid into both ...

HOWEVER the payments are prorated from each country and added together are about the same amount i would have got had i paid S/S payments all my working life in one of the 2 countries.

IF you can get a refund of monies paidinto the US fund then of course your *pension * in the uk will be short the years you didnt subscribe to it .

There are phamplets issued by both the UK (pensions and overseas benefits directorate . internation pensions office . tyneview newcastle upon tyne . eng ne98 1ba ) that explains the agreement between the UK and US regarding s/s benefits im not sure of the phone # there are many but the location i is i do believe correct NEWCASTLE .

There are many phamphlets discribing the same thing from the US S/S that i think it is located in Baltimore .

Best i can do hope it helps
Unless things have changed. They hold the money until you are eligable for a Soc Sec pension. If you don't have enough to qualify for a US pension, you put UK Soc Sec in touch with USA and they will add the USA earnings and adjust the UK Soc Sec pension as if the USA earnings were UK earnings, and increase the pension. This is part of a reciprocal agreement between the two countries.
Hi all,

Just a quick note.
My hubby has a H1B visa and he has to pay SS while he's here.
Granted we are going for the green card but he still has to pay.
Thought there is an agreement between the US and UK, so when you are 65 etc that money is tranfered over. Saves you picking up less from the UK as you did not pay UK social security when you were out the country.

Bloody lurkers lol
