On the subject of remakes.....
I've been watching the new Battlestar Galactica series on DVD.

It was made for TV and is really very good, nothing like the hokey '70's/'80's original.

Same basic idea as the original, human like colonies are wiped out by a robot race, all but for a 'rag tag fugitive fleet' of ships constantly running from the pursuing nasties intent on finishing the job.

After that it's twisted sub plots, dark realities, some good acting and good direction.

For the sci-fi fan it's better than a lot of movie fodder, with more time for plot and character development between the action. ( no lasers)
yeah - sci fi movies are a bit thin on the ground these days, we've been watching stuff on dvd from netflix. Loved Firefly and are now working our way through Babylon 5, i'm fed up with it but Mrs S loves it. Not seen much of BG, but then I was never a fan of the original. Its funny that for a genre as wide open to the imagination as sci fi its remarkable that so few shows try to stretch their boundaries by stepping away from conflict and melodrama.
and thats all I have to say about that...
When the original BG started, I expected the "Pondorosa in Space". And that was pretty close. It turns out that teams of film writers were taking western plots and turning them into big city stories, and into SF scripts and vice versa.
