Has anyone taken their US citizen kids out of the US on British passports only?? Everyone says they have to leave on US passports. But what could they really do about it!! We hope to leave in six months, money's really tight. Do you think they'd be papers to sign at the check-in desk??
Kay,

Going out may not be a problem, I couldn't say, the only people to check my passport is the airline when I checked in and I dont see why they would care one way or the other, they are only worried about if you are legally allowed to enter the country they are shipping you off to.

But coming back in might!! remember they are going to need proof that your children are legally able to reside in the US, flashing their UK passport isn't exactly going to satisfy that condition mrgreen

I dent know how many you need to get, but since a US Passport is $69, compared with the $185 they rob you blind for a UK one at the Embassy in Washington, I would say its a small price to pay.
Thanks David, we won't be coming back! and if we do later on then I'm sure they can get them in UK right?
Ahhhh, Didn't realise you weren't coming back...

According to the US Embassy Website - http://www.usembassy.org.uk - not only can you get US Passports from them, they charge you exactly the same fees as if you were applying for them in the US, unlike our own money grubbing Embassy (You don't think i am sounding embittered about this do you mrgreen ) so that shouldn't be a problem.

David.
I know its daylight robbery and what with the advise line( which incidently seems unobtainable) costing over two bucks a minute makes me wonder!
Wow, I just got off the phone with the US passport office and she asked a supervisor about taking my kids out. She said that I could take them out but might need visas to get back in! I said 'how could that be if they applied for US passports in UK to get back' I said I needed a definate answer and she really wouldn't give me one and said it would be left to my discretion.. What do you make of that! shock
Bearing in mind you are talking to someone from the Passport Office, not the INS/BCIS/Whatever they are called...

The US Embassy in London has the following page-

http//www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/acs/passports/fta.html

Which talks about applying to them for a US Passport for the first time...

Reading it, as long as you have a Certified copy for your Kids Birth Certificate, you should be good to go when the time comes, if you haven't got a copy maybe now is the time, when we got one for our Son they did it on the Spot.
