Hi,
We are hoping to move to Spain and my Hubby to work and commute to Gibraltar.
Does anyone on this site do this???
We have been researching on the web and are in the process of sending off my hubby's cv's to the agencies in Gibraltar, my hubby is a computer engineer.
We would like some suggestions on where to live, that is in our price range and that has a very good state school for our 7 year old daughter, there is such a vaste area near Gibraltar and some are out of our price range, there are a lot of smaller villages that are cheaper but harder to research. We are maybe looking to rent at first then buy, the top end of our budget is £160,000 but we would prefer to get something around the £140,000 mark. We are looking for some kind of house with a private garden, as we have a dog.
We have found lots of nice properties but they are to far away, my hubby does not want to have more then an hours commute.
If anyone could help us we would be most grateful.
Thanks
First of all welcome to the board. razz
My family lives in Spain although not in the area you are looking to move.
I noticed in your intro that you chose Gibraltar because they are English.
I would strongly suggest you and your family learn Spanish, it will make everything from getting mail to negotiating a house deal so much easier.
Even though Gibralta is Brit pretty much everyone working there speaks Spanish.
If you want to live and work in the Spanish community then you need to be able to speak the language.
You may want to just rent a house until you have time to reseach areas and give yourself the time to find that bargain if you are on a fixed amount.
Having said all that, good luck with the job hunt and come back and let us know how it's all going for you.
Your story could help others who are looking to do the same kind of move.

Hi Wendi,
Thanks for your reply.
We are definately going to learn Spanish but to work in Gibraltar you do not need to be fluent in Spanish but to work in the kind of job my hubby wants in Spain you do.
That's why we think it would be easier to work in Gibraltar to start off with and then once we are able to speak the language then we can look at different things.
Thanks again for your reply

Actually my point wasn't really the working part of your move as almost anywhere along the coast you will find areas where pretty much anyone speaks English.
Having lived in Spain myself as a mum it is the best thing you could do for yourself and child.
Unless you send to a private English speaking school she will be required to learn Spanish for school and fast. Though it seems easy for them at that age.
It will also help you a lot in dealing with teachers and with living in the community.
You didn't mention if you will be working too.
Believe me being able to ask for what you want or need is much easier than sign language and pointing.
Doing a web search can provide many links to living and working in Spain.
Here's one to get you going http//www.idealspain.com/Pages/Information/WorkingInSpain.htm
Dear Wendi,
Again thank you for your reply.
As I put in my above post we definately intend to learn the language, we have never had any intention of moving to Spain without learning the language, as we feel it is an important part of emigrating and intergrating. We also intend to school our daughter in a state school, as we want her also to learn the language and intergrate into Spanish society.
I do not intend to work at first, until I am ok with the language, I may later get a part-time job or do some volunteer work.
Thank you for the web link.

Hi,
We are in the decision making process of doing the very same thing at the moment. I am looking at getting a job in Gibraltar and living down the coast in Spain. We have a young daughter aged 2 and a half and think it would be a good move for all for all the usual reasons. It would be nice to keep in touch with someone who is going through the same thing, my email address is nickmeeke@btopenworld.com if you want to email chat directly.
Keep us informed with how things are going.
Regards
Nick Meeke
