Anyone used a shirring foot on a sewing machine? Also, is it possible to use a gathering foot, all that's sold in good ole USA, to do shirring succesfully?
Needless to say the machine is Singer, which I am beginning to regret, but it's like buying a hoover isn't it? lol
Shirring is a way to cook eggs, is that a special singer ? lol

Well, I had to look that one up!
the last time I used something like that, annie, was in school! But I don't see why you couldn't use a gathering foot considering that is all shirring is in a nutshell. Probably, it might be one of those words that Americans don't use for sewing and just for cooking eggs :???:
I went to a UK source and found this
About Quilting > Sewing Machines & Irons > Sewing Machine Attachments & Accessories - Shirring Foot - For 14SH654 Machine
Shirring Foot--This foot is used for shirring or gathering. Use in home dec and clothing construction. Compatible with Singer Models 14SH654
Another Uk source replies that one line of stitching is "gathering". multiple lines are/is "shirring".
Sounds like the practise of the black arts mrgreen
Thank you , it's not eggs, it is sewing, it's just that over here the presser foot they show you online, is not the one they sell you, and that is a gathering foot, and it is different to the one in UK which won't fit my machine without a universal shank and guides the elastic thread through a little tubular thingy.
Ben, I'm about to embark on taking apart a dress I bought in Maui which has a shirred back and tiny straps, a sundress, and make a pattern and run up a few more, cos they're so comfy and ideal for hot weather. I hit the stores during sale time a couple of years back and bought the ends of rolls of material and now have a stash of stuff I should use up. Far to fine and flimsy for cushions which is all the sewing I've been doing of late.
I now find I regret selling my industrial machine and not replacing it when I got over here. None of these fancy feet, just a plain old machine with loads of power and the ability to sew tissue paper or lino. Ah well, we live , we learn.
BTW, what on earth are shirred eggs?
???
Please ignore the last comment, I have just been to the recipe board and found out, I always thought those eggs were coddled. roll
