Top of the Pops has been cancelled...Should we be concerned? Is this significant, a catastrophe? or simply a sign of the times. On MTV you can call up and request your favourite song, so the repetitions are on a par with Local Radio or Radio One, TOTP, last time i saw it, had given up half of the show to weak celebrity Ligging and almost Almost legendary pop-style interviewing.
Remember its hayday or were you too busy doing something else.
Read it here.. I don't care anymore..

wow, Mum always said, you'll know when your getting old because there will be more wakes than receptions!
Same goes for TV guess
It's sad, but it's a sign of the times. People have moved on and I can no longer watch it anyway and probably wouldn't if I could.

Yes, I remember its heyday - in fact I probably first watched it in 1967 or 68. It was a "must see" on Thursday nights in the 70s when I was a teenager. By then we knew the charts on Tuesdays, but I used to have my mum write down the Top 20 for me (in shorthand - I couldn't write quick enough) as they announced it all the way through right at the end of the show.

I remember also that the Radio 1 dj's took turns to host the show Jimmy Savile, Tony Blackburn, Noel Edmonds, DLT (my personal favourite), etc etc etc.

Top of the Flops with Pan's Grannies..... ah!
This was must see tv growing up, haven't seen it for 6 years so I have no idea how it is faring. I enjoyed the addition of TOTP2, crying shame, never ever missed it.
You can watch little clips from the TOTPs archive.

I think the writing was on the wall for TOTP more than a few years ago. It had its heyday and was just a show that lived upon a nostalgia factor from years ago. To the beeb's credit they tried to reinvent it and tried to breathe new air into it but it didnt have that same charisma as years ago and didnt appeal to an ever changing generation of music fans and tastes.

I remember TOTP in the 70's but my main memories are from the 80's. I remember when Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse did their send up of TOTP and the DJs like Dave Lee Travis, Mike Reed, Noel Edmunds, Tony Blackburn and Peter Powell on their show Smashie And Nicey The End Of An Era. I think it just sent up that era and TOTP with the obligatory Radio 1 hosts so very well.
Only TotP I recall is the one with Brian Jones. Gawd, he was beautiful. I was 16 and he was just lovely. lol
Howard Jones? He was far from beautiful?
She said she was 16...

roll oops grin shock
This man grin
He don't do a thing for me mrgreen

This thread is making me feel very old, the show was only 2YO when I came here, I only saw one one and it was full of screamng kids so I didn't go back to it, not that I spent many nights at home in those days.
Think of the current TOTP this way - the British charts are filled with ring-tones and podcasts. So having a 30 second shitty ringtone and Ricky Gervais making fun of people from Bristol didn't really suit TOTP. Actually when it was cancelled it reminded meof a post Monster made a long time ago about whether people buy albums anymore - people don't even have the patience or desire to watch a chart show anymore. But to be fair TOTP was fairly awful now - a new number one every 3 days has something to do with that I supose.
dont remember the show much from the 70s thats when i came here.
Its a good of example of british quality tv programmig and its stood the test of time .
The time started ticking on TOTP when 24 hour music TV arived with MTV.

They never really moved with the times and to be honest even if they did the world as we know it is much different now than it was say ten years ago.

We now download our music and access it now is so many different ways. With satellite radio which is now in a lot of vehicles in the US at least that's changed the way we listen to music without ad's etc. Like TV where you can pick which kind of music you listen to say the 70's, 80's, rock music etc.

Still, I am sad to see it go but its to be expected sadly. RIP TOTP and thanks for the memories.
