So do you have the plan already? What's the real cost after all those surcharges? How much is the equipment?

They don't have a startup deal at the moment, so all you're getting is a "free after instant rebate" voip router and a bill for $20 setup and $10 for shipping. So you're $60 out of pocket from the get-go. We're waiting on their free first month deal which comes around pretty frequently.
Not much in the way of surcharges per month - a lot less than the landline rips us off with. Like $9 per month for the Intralata and all that crap, even though we never dial long distance from our landline we still have to pay them for it.
We currently pay Verizon $16 or so for an add-on package with voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, etc... which this gives us. Add $4 for the international calling plan and we're $5-$10 out of pocket for unlimited long distance (which will cut our cellphone minutes) and unlimited calling home...
We'll have to keep the landline as Verizon won't let us split the DSL from it even though it is a technical possibility - just their provisioning policy stops them from doing it.
Will probably use the landline as a fax line as fax via voip is iffy.
Add on $5 a month and my mum can call me for the cost of a local call.

... and just as they start offering Europe for free...
Our area only just started availability of the "dry loop" DSL service which means you just get the internet without the phone line - like getting HBO without the local networks.
So we cancelled our landline and DSL, which was a meagre 768/192, and we signed up for the dry loop which means we have to be without internet for 2 weeks while they process the order - but at the end of that we get 3mb/768 FOR THE SAME PRICE as we were paying on the landline - $35 per month on a year commitment.
So we'll be paying a total of $65-$75 including taxes for faster DSL and unlimited VoIP to North America and 5 European countries, including all normal extras like voicemail and stuff.
Until now we have been paying $45 for landline, $35 for DSL and $15 for the voicemail/call waiting/caller ID = $20 more!
Woohoo! Woohoohoooooo! Woohooooo, wooohoo hoooo...!

Y'all must call the UK a lot for it to be worth it....

I don't. But until this point the cost has been prohibitive. It's basically a balance between that and the cellphone account which has the lowest minutes possible.

Spoke to mum for 2 hours yesterday. Sound quality was superb, I could even hear the pigeons cooing in the back garden.
In case she calls me at the weekend and I am out, I can set it up via the web to blast my cellphone and any other number I may be at, like the in-laws.
Very nice.
