I heard on NPR news about this story, Guantanamo detainees were sent to Albania without the knowledge of their attorneys. One of them had the opportunity to speak and was extremely annoyed that he was told about this "when the plane was landing in Albania".

What are/were the intentions of the U.S. government? Do you think they really cared about the well being of the individuals involved? What about the future of Guantanamo, do you think they should close it?
My opinion is they did this to avoid going to trial, according to the one of the lawyers, they had no legal reason to keep them there, and now he is Albania trying to get them out of a "gated compound for refugees".
Oh I think the US position on how they are handling the GITMO people is well understood. There is little if any case against many of them, yet the US has decided that it will not only violate it's own laws but those of a good proportion of the world as well.
I think it is very telling that no one on the face of this planet is prepared to stand up and be heard.
I'm ashamed of my own country and hold this one in distain(spelling?)
Not only are these people flown around the world to avoid a trial, they are moved so as to avoid tortue and abuse(annoying laws)!
Of course some of these people are criminals, but they still deserve to be treated as prisioners and not as ..well, we don't treat anything else on this planet like that do we!
Bushes legacy will haunt this country for generations, shame he's too damn stupid to realise it!
Well Gitmo is now clearly causing a split between the US and the UK.

I am sure you are right about some of them being criminals, but we need to know which ones are now, and those held there for no reason should be compensated buy this country. Bush's legacy certainly will damage America's image, but I think the next president can do a lot to appease the world community. The sheer acknowledgment that the Iraq war was a mistake is a good starting point, but I doubt it will happen.

I think this says it all:
"The historic tradition of the United States as a beacon of freedom, liberty and of justice deserves the removal of this symbol (Lord Goldsmith)"
The Bush position on Gitmo and the whole war on terror has done more to serve the interests of Bin Laden, the Saudis, Iran etc than any terrorist could ever have dreamed of.
It will be a long time before the rest of the world keeps a straight face when America starts lecturing them on democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
What should also concern people here though is that many of the individual acts of abuse perpetrated by US personel (such as the prisoner abuse scandal) are based on practices, presumptions and values that already operate domestically. These people didn't invent new stuff for the war on terror - they just took what they already did and brought it to a bigger stage.
