Anyone see Stephen Colbert's speech at the White House Correspondents Dinner at the weekend? If not, it's worth a look and the video footage can be found at C-Span or left wing blog sites.

As an after-dinner speaker, performing before an audience expecting some light-hearted entertainment, he bombed badly......but in a country full of journalists, commentators and other brown-nosing administration helpers, he was unbelievably brave and basically said what a growing number of Americans must surely be thinking, even if they aren't quite as brave to admit it to their friends or neighbours.

I enjoy his show on Comedy Central "The Colbert Report" and it seemed an odd choice for someone to actually book him to speak at this function. Perhaps they supposed he would do something light and play along with the other brown-nosers present at this previously vomit-worthy dinner.

The mainstream media seem to be doing an excellent job of covering up the fact that Colbert basically let rip with razor sharp barbs aimed at the President (sitting a few feet away), his administration and the toadies in the media that help prop him up.

I'm sure Colbert will be criticised for crossing the line but that's too bad. Just where does the politician end and where does the head of state begin?
I have to disagree, this is fun time, an annual equivalent of PM question time. The idea is to singe people, not burn them, Colbert used a flamethrower.

You didn't say anything about the Presidents performance; that performance was a surprise.
That was fun.

No - I figured there was plenty of coverage of that in the mainstream media - very amusing that the President would play a dimwit.

Not to pick on you Londonsquare but exactly what was the President using when he pretended to look for WMD in a previous Association dinner? A thermo-noo-coolar bomb?

If you can't stand the heat regards....
