I am well aware of most of the negative things about living in UK, and these play an important part in my decision making process.
However I would like to know what other people find good about life in UK.
Some things I have noticed, for starters, and these of course are comparing UK to Adelaide where I live now.
1. Pubs are a million times better, more atmoshpere, better beer, better food and better entertainment
2. There are things for tourists to do, and of course even people living in UK can be tourists at weekend etc. These include many wonderful theme parks, swimming centres, high quality shopping and entertainment centres, fascinating museums many of which have interactive and unique fun experiences
3. Being able to see relatives there without saving up for a whole year and taking all my annual leave!
4. Much wider range of food available including many of my old favourites not available in Australia
5. Better TV including free to air channels and now free satallite TV if you buy a digibox
6. More job opportunities by far
That's enough from me for now, someone elses turn!
Most of the items you list seem to be aimed at tourists or under 25's.
Been in Canada for 43 years and you couldn't pay me enough to return to live permenantly. OK for a visit, but not to see relatives.
you obviously don't like your relatives too much!
anyway who else has thought of some good UK stuff. Come on guys, we all know it's the best country in the world so let's hear it!

At 75 most of my relatives are dead. The ones that really mater my wife, children and grandchildren are all over here.
Make a life of your own.

Live for the future not the past.
Get a life.

see here
I stand corrected... lol lol lol
No offence guys, but some of you seem to have misunderstood what I meant by positive stuff about living in UK.
What I meant was, what are the GOOD things that you can enjoy in UK?
What I didn't mean was "Please insult me by calling me a sad loser and telling me to get a life"
Anyway thanks for trying!

Thanks Keith but I already have one. I will let you know if I'm ever looking for a better one!
It may just be that we can't think of any and it seems rude not to respond ;)
Seriously, Keith's really the only one who has really replied here, and he's a grumpy old man for whom the UK is no more real today than working down the pit at the age of 10! :P
Dazmo "stands corrected" and the rest of us... well. I still haven't thought of much yet. I'd say maybe not having to use your driving licence as an unofficial identity card but wait...... Or how about a cozy night down the boozy smoky pub sneaking a last one in before closing time..... oh no, no last orders anymore, no smoking anymore, and I have three kids..........
Food, well maybe, but we've learned to make the missed favourites. And when we went back and tried to get our favourite British Chinese takeaway dish, we couldn't find it anywhere. It's all changed in the 5 years we've been gone.
We're in America -there are more jobs here than there in general, don't miss the rellies -never lived close to them. We fly the MIL out here rather than flying back and she gets to see the sprogs more than she did when we were in the UK.
Sorry, I really am trying, but there's very little that holds appeal for me there compared to here.
But I do fancy trying a year or two in Aus! :D
....Oh, oh, I know! Countryside hikes. There. I knew I'd think of something. :)
I was homesick. But with different reasons to the above. I missed my mum, we are so close, my brother, and the biggest thing was my grandsons.
Yes i seriously thought about going home again. It didn't last long though as the whole place has gone down hill since we left.
We have a life here now, a much better life, and I know we are luckier than most on here.
And I hated the smoky pubs too.
And it rained
And I'm over it now.
I think this thread is best left for those who travel back to write their thoughts on when they get back. If you haven't been home in 5 years you're not going to know!
Bearing in mind this is from the point of view of living in the Midwest
* Being able to walk anywhere
* Being able to ride a bus, train or some other public vehicle to the most important shopping centres, sports events, etc.
* Knowing I can buy a good loaf of bread
* Not needing Tivo to fast forward through a 33% advert content on any TV programme
* Having my mail delivered to my house, not to a little box 20 yards away from it across the street (although I do like that the 'outbound' option is just there and not a mile down the road)
I'll come back with more later.
If you haven't been home in 5 years you're not going to know!.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Marmite was back there very recently and I did not say I had not been back in 5 years, so to whom do you refer?
