Not sure if this belongs in TV or sport, but as it is a sports programme I thought it belonged here most.

Sad to hear that Grandstand will be phased out. At least they are giving it a full 50 years before pulling the plug. They just played the whole 2.5 minute theme on Radio 1, I felt like I was 11 again, getting ready to watch the FA Cup Final between Arsenal and West Ham and hearing Bob Wilson's preview on the game.

Wow. A big part of my life is about to get flushed down the drain.

Check the Beeb site for a photo gallery which includes some much younger Lynams, Boughs and Colemans, and the horse racing results and football results cards. They brought back memories!
Shame, Football Focus and Steak Pudding and Chips a Key part of my Saturday Lunchtime growing up....

It wont surprise me if this decision gets reversed, but in the meantime, you cant look at any Grandstand pics without the theme.....

I meant to post this yesterday so I'm glad you did it.
Ive got the same kind of memories of Football Focus with Bob Wilson, and remember rugby league with Eddie Waring with his 'up and under'? grin
Grandstand on the FA Cup final day was always special too where theyd have the goal of the season and where you call the BBC and request a great sporting moment and when they did FA Cup Final Its A Knockout wink

The most intense part of the day was Final Score and the results came in on the telewriter, there was a strange hush in our living room as the results was printed out and later was on a screen grin
I'm not sure if I preferred David Coleman, Frank Bough or Des Lynam? but saying that there were a few other presenters too......
Didnt David Icke host Grandstand at one time? shock

To be honest I think I preferred the theme to Sportsnight and Match Of The Day to Grandstand.
Ive been in the USA too long................
I just got choked up thinking about the theme to MOTD roll
Heard about that yesterday. Sad indeed, I liked it a lot but its been neglected a lot over many years.

Sad to see it go though.
I think Colin (of Colin & Edith) summed it up on Radio 1. He was talking to someone who was sad to see the show go, but their conversation went something like this

Colin So when's the last time you watched Grandstand?
Guest When the 6 Nations was on.
Colin So you just watched it for that?
Guest Yes.
Colin So when was the last time you sat down on a Saturday afternoon just to watch Grandstand without a care as to what sport was on it?
Guest *silence*

We're in the Tivo age. Or Sky Plus as they have over there. No-one is going to skyplus a five hour chunk of sport.

There's the possibility Football Focus and Final Score will remain as individual programmes, with four hours of sports coverage inbetween. But I think the sports will be actually scheduled rather than filling in the time.

I wonder if they'll still show horse racing, as that seemed to be the meat in the sandwich, but it was always at weird times and only for a few minutes each side of the race.
A good point East17 - the times have changed and a show like Grandstand simply can't go on forever, despite our great memories of it.

Personally, I'd watch Football Focus and Final Score and never bothered with what was in between. When I was going to matches, I'd not be able to watch any of it anyway.
I agree to a point about sitting down and watching Grandstand, by me saying this it isnt meant to rip on anything which has been said in posts, but to me 'times have changed' is a euphanism for something more sinister. The sporting events which made Grandstand have been gradually eroded and taken away by Sky. The beeb has a job to get the rights for tiddlywinks wink
