I like that site - I've used it a bunch of times to avoid the crap leg-room seats and also get the power ports in economy.

only problem is I used it to look for good seats for my Virgin flight to the UK in November but the sods charge extra for exit rows and they were not included in the selection when I booked online. There is a premium to book an exit row for many airlines now.

Yes, exit rows are generally sought after so they offer them to frequent flyers first. Also, they can make sure that useful people sit in exit rows as you have to able to open and remove the emergency exit door so that excludes a number of folks who would be a liability there in an emergency.
I got an exit row last time I flew with United (who I never fly with) but I assume they saw my frequent flyer status with American (whose flight I'd missed - their fault) and bumped me into a decent seat with lots of space.
