MONDAY, March 20 (HealthDay News) -- Could Oprah and General Hospital be bad for your brain?
New research suggests that elderly women who watch daytime soap operas and talk shows are more likely to suffer from cognitive impairment than women who abstain from such fare.
iT only applies it seems to the elderly but will watching them make you elderly faster ???? LOL

My grandma used to watch her soaps. Her day was governed by 3 or 4 of them. Now, I can't remember exactly which ones she watched. Inbetween each one she used to read her romantic novels. She was alert and knew everything that was going on until the day she died.
Hubby's grandma, on the other hand, never watched TV and did puzzle books. As time went on she started to get the answers from the back believing she had done them herself. Her memory went downhill fast so that for at least the last 10 years she didn't even know who her own daughter was! She never forgot how to play the piano, though. grin
I just have one problem - I stopped watching soaps after moving to the US. Can't stand the US ones! roll So I might be OK or I may not! lol
Does watching Old Eastenders once a week count? wink
Well I definitely tend towards the theory that the cognitively-impared are more likey to watch garbage TV than the garbage TV being resposible for the decay. I wonder what the results would be for men? Oh wait, you've got to be able to separate the cognitively-impared from the not, first, haven't you? P
I think there is a big difference between the daytime soaps of the US and the evening soaps of the UK. Daytime tv in the US is mind-fogging whatever your age. (I know this because I watched non-stop talk shows for the first three years I was in the country. By the end of that time I could name 27 different talk-show hosts!!)
If you are watching two or three hour-long soaps plus a couple of talk shows from noon to 5pm five days a week, you are not out and about, not socialising etc. Your mind is dulled and when you come to, the day is practically over.
If you are just watching Corrie and Eastenders in the evenings there is a good chance you have been doing other things during the day and the evening relaxation time is what you need.
eek! I need to get dressed for work!! This is another time-waster!!!!

Just the same for men I would think except they turn to sports programs. Either way they are a waste of time.
