Can anyone tell me if small appliances from UK will work in USA eg slow cookers kettles I know my hair dryer will and my computer but what of this other stuff? We are moving to Florida at the end of March and need to know what to take. All help appreciated!!!
Anything that has a 110/220v switch near the power inlet will, plus stuff marked as 100-250v AC. All these may be +- 10volts.
Kettles, toasters etc will not. But you can buy them here, toaster ovens are fab.
Some stuff that has a switch mode power supply will work even though not specified to, my Pace satellite reciever works great.......can't watch bugger all with it mind !!!!!
you'll have to buy plug adapters, though and they'll probably wear out faster. Chances are it's cheaper to buy new here than ship them and adapt them, but if you're not paying shipping or they are particularly good/expensive items then cost is not the main/only issue.
Monster is right. Don't bother with bringing that stuff over, one trip to Target will replace all of that stuff plus you get spiffy warranties.
Thanks everyone for all your replies. Yeah some of the stuff was particularly good. I was going to bring it for my daughter. I will be buying mine all new. I have decided to give it all away here. Have someone coming today to see what all they want
What kind of stuff do you need? Try walmart.com or target.com for the basic electricals and lightbulbs if you have a place in the US you can get mail held until you get here.
Well made a lot of trips to the tip today. We are now sleeping on a mattress on the floor. Ten days til we have to be out as the new owners will be taking possession. I gave all my small electrial appliances away along with several boxes of boot sale items. Have to keep the cooker fridge freezer washer and dryer til nearer the end. I do know target and walmart because I am American hubby is british

My wife has become attached to the slow-cooker she bought here and wants to take it back to the UK...so does the same rule apply to stuff going back to the UK? Don't want the house to burn down while she's making a casserole ..
When I first came here I brought only a hair dryer which worked fine, since the brought a lamp back that worked fine. I haven't tried and other appliances. So you are moving back to sunny England? Goof luck to you

It needs a transformer, they have them set up with the right plugs in some of the kits.

Cheers......anyone want a slow cooker then? It's staying
I bought a power converter from ebay uk for something like 8 pounds and got it mailed to my mum's address in england to save me lugging it over there in my luggage. It'll convert things from 240 to 110 (or the other way round if that is what you need/buy).
Not like I am taking much at all in the line of electrical goods, but it'll save me from having to get new chargers for my camcorder and phones, etc.
Just a thought! smile

I have one of those things already and I think it will be fine for some of our other gadgets but leaving a slow cooker on for 6 hours with that is maybe a bit risk?
Maybe some of the Brit 'sparks' can give a professional opinion,..

A "converter" is a transformer. If the power rating (Number of watts) on the converter is as high or higher than the cooker, there should be no trouble, I'm sure the slow cooker uses less power than a hair dryer for example.
I would not be too happy using a transformer with a slow cooker, on for too long unattended.
There must be slow cookers in the UK.
