They must be desperate!
I have had my 10 year PR card for maybe three weeks and I received a letter from the city court containing a 'Juror Qualification Questionaire'... maybe this is like a welcome packet! My US citizen wife has lived in the county all her life and never received one.
Question # 1 is 'are you a US citizen' .... am I right in thinking that you have to be a US citizen to be called for jury duty?
So I am hoping to be rejected out of hand )
Graham
How did they get your name? I thought they got it from the electoral regtister?
I just got called up too. I've been a citizen for about a year.
Mike got one of those letters a few years ago. We just ticked the "Not a US Citizen" box and sent it back.
Debs x smile
Isn't it driving license records that they pull this information from?
adeshell.... that is a good question isn't it. Clearly I am not on the electoral role her, perhaps the city has some sort of resident list? or maybe from my social security number?
Hi Debs... well I did answer all of the questions but I expect that the 'not a citizen' box will have be deleted from possibility fast!
Graham
That could well be Pilgrim... and yes that would include me.
My husband gets a call up about every 2 years regardless of sending them a photocopy of his passport and ticking the non citizen box! I think it was originally triggered by the Social Security Office. neutral
Sister keeps getting them, she lives in Boston, I should keep the next one and photo copy it for here.
I swear to god, one of the FAQs on the damn thing was "what if I'm not intelligent enough for jury service?"
And, "where will I eat my lunch?"
that's all you need on your case, some dumb ass, who's more concerned with where the next burger is coming from than your case!
I'll see if she has the paper work still, and post it here.
I looked up how they do it in my state Oregon and this is what it says, using Union County as an example:
Selecting jurors for two-month stints "is totally at random," court administrator John DeNault said.
No one at the courthouse in La Grande has anything to do with the selection process except in a very remote way.
Once each year, DeNault said, he sends a request to the Oregon Judicial Department in Salem asking their computer people to produce a master list of 3,500 names for the annual jury pool in Union County.
The judicial department staff then uses computers to combine the county's list of registered voters with a list of those living in Union County who have either an Oregon driver's license or an Oregon identity card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The computer program creates the master list of potential jurors, all [at least] 18.
"We do not run any screening programs," DeNault says. The truth of that, he said, is that the master list sometimes includes the names of deceased residents and those who have moved from Union County.
From that list of names, another computer selection of 350 names is made. Those names are sent questionnaires about their ability to serve — in envelopes from the local court that are mailed from Salem.
When those questionnaires are returned to Union County, court personnel begin compiling the juror pools.
Here you! read and weep with laughter.
This link is too the Mass trial jurors handbook, it's not made up, it's deadly real! I crack up, everytime I read it.

I got the ASCII version to open in wordpad.
From near the bottom.
"Q. Being a juror is very difficult. What if I am not smart enough to be a good juror?"
LOLOLOLOL roll lol lol lol
Isn't it driving license records that they pull this information from?
because, of course, if you don't drive, you can't possibly be right-minded.......

More of an unofficial State and Federal identity card, I think although that's not to say you are wrong, Dr. M!
