Yes, today I ate scrapple. Mrs S wasn't impressed, so I ate hers as well, on toast. Seems that its some kind of delicacy round these here DE/MD parts, in the same way that eating animal nads is considered likewise in other parts of the world. Whats it all about? Not sure, would prefer a nice chunk of pigs liver to be honest but this'll have to do for now. I've been informed that it won't be granted permission to reside in our fridge so I'll have to order it at local diners.
Here's a picture of some scrapple on a plate.
Blech, scrapple is nasty and like black pudding it is all the bits of the pig they don't know what to do with! (but I LOVE black pudding.... grin )
I actually like it if it's cooked with spices...IOW how they cook it in Louisiana
Andrew )
it's kinda sorta like haggis and black pudding in taste and what it's made of (leftover pig bits!).
I find it not unpleasant, wouldn't avoid it, may order it at a fast food place if I feel like it smile
oooh it reminds me of something I used to have in sandwiches in England but cut thinly...What was it called? Anyone? ?
can you remember any details - like, what colour it was, was it sweet or savoury, that kind of thing...?
Was it Haslet or Brawn????
Debs x smile
zOMG...
It's been so long since I had either of those... darn, I miss them NOT A JOT wink
Haslet = Meatloaf, cold and sliced thin, but with more herbs than over here. And not so much Ketchup as ingredient.
Happy Eating! grin
Meatloaf is made with various combinations of ground meats.
haslet is
n. animal's fry or entrails, especially braised or compressed into a meat loaf. according to tiscali and the Huchinson Encyclopedia.
Scrapple is everything on the hog that is edible but not saleable on its own, except that it is cooked with grains, so it is a kind of cold polenta.
I've never heard of it shock
Yes! It was 'Haslet'. Mum would buy it special for me. Never thought what it was made of. Tasted good to me!
