All right. I confess.

I'm not actually British.

BUT I lived in Warwick for three years, and find myself, as a U.S. citizen, back in the U.S., feeling much more like a Brit expat.

Nothing goes with mash better than onion gravy. I used to buy Sainsburys' brand. It came in a handy plastic container and I'd toss it in the trolley without a care in the world.

I'd like to know if there are any of you out there who would like to give a "homesick" non-Brit expat your granny's favourite recipe, or one that you think can match or even outdo Sainsburys' gravy. Because here in the U.S., gravy comes in powdered form from a packet and is DISGUSTING!

I generally serve onion gravy with sausage and mash (I get the sausages from a local Irish "pub") and having fried the sausages I tip in a large sliced onion and sizzle it gently until it softens and is just coloured. Then I remove them with a slotted spoon and set aside. If there is not enough fat in the pan I add a bit of lard then sprinkle a tablespoon of AP flour in, blend with the melted fat then cook for a few minutes on low until it starts to brown. Then add about a pint of good beefy stock (I dissolve a Knorr beef bouillon cube and an OXO cube in some of the water that the potatoes have cooked in) a bit at a time, whisking constantly so you don't get lumps, then cook for a few minutes until boiling and thickened. If it is too thick you can add some more stock or veggie water, then add the reserved onions. I add a bit of gravy browning too to give it some colour but I think you can get gravy seasoning which does more or less the same job.

Hope this helps!

With that description Debs, I can almost smell those sausages sizzzzzling in the pan! ! lol
I'll have to give that a try, Deb, I didn't know how to make it so I took the part from a recipe for Salisbury steak that has a lot of onions in it, and that's fine with me. I don't get many Brit style sausages so I use brats, that I like just as well.
Buy the Heinz make in a jar, its really good and much better than that nasty packet stuff!!

No kidding! Bloody hungry now

You could also do liver and bacon instead of the sausage and make the gravy the same way. My mother used to do this but she'd do sausages as well 'cos I wouldn't eat liver!!!! lol
