It seems that Britnet has been really, really quiet over the past week or so. Did you all go on holiday together and not invite me? cry
I'm here )

When I'm back at work and college, and the children need their taxi and general dogs body roll , I don't get much chance to post.
It has been a bit empty in here this week. I look in whenefer I use the computer, but generally I react rather than instigate.

I try to keep reminding myself of Mark Twain's dictum "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. "
I'm here, but the last two weeks have been even more utter nuts than usual! Quite, quite crazy.

I'm skiving now with the pretence of doing taxes . . . . .

Perhaps everyone just froze to death? It's been bloody cold here with rolling blackouts in some parts of the state because of the high energy demands. -13f, -27c I don't know what the difference between them is than it's just bloody cold.

Last night at work a water pipe burst and ended up mopping hot water, for it was a hot water pipe that burst about the facility. Between two emergency services and our security guards/maintenance crew none of them could find the water shut off for half an hour.

Dry cold my arse. But I've done my taxes.

Yup. Five different tax filings later and I'm finally complete. Worst thing is that we come out about even in the end, not with any kind of net refund. Its the city taxes that are the killer. My employer screwed up the witholding and we didn't even know we had to pay any city taxes until a couple of weeks ago.

What a pain, adeshell. I know when we moved from NJ to NYstate we have a heck of a lot of paperwork and figuring out. We got an accountant to do it all then.

And yes, hubby sorted taxes out. Second year using Turbotax and love it. It is just so easy. Got caught in extra paperwork with flippin AMT (I think that is what it was) this year

My most difficult tax year was one when I was commuting to North Carolina to work on the upgrade of a nuclear power plant. Even though we were on expenses, the client insisted that we pay NC state taxes.

North Carolina required that their return be linked to the federal tax return. However, if only one partner had NC tax liability, and if they filed a joint federal return, that partner must put together a schedule showing what their federal tax would have been, if they had filed separately. So my NC return had their forms, plus a copy of our federal return, plus the schedule showing my liability if our federal returns had been separate.

Pennsylvania state taxes allow an offset of any taxes paid to other states, but to obtain this offset, a copy of the returns for the other state(s) must be included with the Pennsylvania return. So, my Pennsylvania return included my NC return, which included the federal return and the schedule. Since we owned a condo for investment, at the time, and itemized expenses, we had quite a package for the state.

I don't know how the law stands now, but we got a shock with the condo. Most people bought them to protect current income, particularly by depreciating the property. We didn't want to depreciate, we wanted to build up equity, and then sell it to help with college expenses for our daughters. When i came to do the taxes for that first year, I read the book and found that when we sell the place we would have to reduce the cost basis by "the amount of depreciation allowed or allowable."

Then, they change the law so that capital gains were taxed as ordinary income. The net result was that we saved on taxes each year but the paid it back as capital gains tax when we sold. The law was recently change back to allow a lower rate on capital gains.
Very cold here too. Hail and snow on the hills. Very unusual. Very nasty, not nice and yes, we're hibernating. grin

Taxes, yikes, haven't got to them yet mrgreen
Well it was meant to be a long weekend doing not much. I took Saturday off but started some work from home yesterday about 9 am, I finished at 11 pm last night and I have been at it for 3 hours this morning. I have finished what I had planned but my boss has just told me I have to look at something else as he is stuck in New Jersey until 10 pm tonight and we are running payroll early tomorrow morning. Weekends...yes I remember them !!!
Dont worry about not being to busy it goes like that sometimes ,remember there is only a core group of about 20 ( if that many ) who contribute regularly with new posts or responses .

Sometimes we all seem to miss a day at the same time . Yesterday i was ready to have a good session on this site and one of my cats plonked himself on the desk in front of the screen blocking my view and demanded attention .... what could i do ???

We are in the middle of doing taxes another nice rebate year seems ahead as usual .
Normally if there is money to come back its posted ASAP as soon as all the paper work is complete dislike having to give the govt a tax free loan of overpaid taxes .

The only year we owed i left it until the very last minute before filing .
This year sickness and other family bisiness got in the way and the filing was put aside.
I'm here now and again. I'm either really busy at work and then I don't get to use the computer much or I am really busy with after work things and don't get to use my own computer much. roll
I'm rarely on here nowadays and I miss the old place (and the old faces... wink lol )

I've just been very busy with work, moving plans, marriage plans, going to England in April plans and just life in general plans!

Him broke his best mates computer last week and had to lend him his. This justifies Him using my computer instead! roll So now I have even less time to get on here so I normally squeeze out a few minutes in the day at work to have a quick peak. Although it can go weeks before I get a chance to have a ganders, like! D

As for taxes I probably won't be doing mine until the last minute as I already know that I owe about $1000. I under withheld last year - by accident - and ended up getting a larger than expected year end bonus. It's actually fine with me because it's like getting a free advance but I wouldn't let it happen again. I prefer to have a small refund as opposed to being under-taxed. Also Mr IRS wouldn't approve of happening on a frequent basis.

That's my life in a nutshell...Probably won't hear from me for another month now... D

I'm back!

Just got back from a short visit to UK...we were only there for 8 days!!!! I'll plough through all the posts later on when I've got Lucy off to school and a load of laundry in.

I can well recommend Lufthansa for a transatlantic flight - we had to fly to Munich though to get the plane as they don't do a direct from Manchester. It was beautifully clean, the stewards were more than attentive and there was plenty of legroom, unlike United who we flew out with and almost ended up getting kneecapped. Most uncomfortable.

Oh, and Lufthansa don't charge you for drinks on board and gave Mike a complimentary 30 minutes of online time with their WIFI system!
