Don't you have to carry them now? It used to be required.

The law says you must. The CIS take a more relaxed view and state that you just need to have it available if an agent needs to see it.

Quote:
Permanent Resident Card
The Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551, is issued to all Permanent Residents as evidence of alien registration and their permanent status in the US. The card must be in your possession at all times. While that does not require that you have on your person at all times, it does require that you have a currently valid card and that you know where it is and can show it to an immigration officer, if requested. The Permanent Resident Card currently is issued with a 10-year validity. You status as a Permanent Resident does not expire with the 10-year validity. Only the card expires. The card is only valid up to the expiration date and must be renewed before it expires.

I keep mine safely at home and only dig it out if I'm leaving the country. There is absolutely no danger of me being racially profiled and I can easily pass as a citizen anyway so I have no worries but that may not apply to everyone, thinking about it.

P.S. Well done Dazmo!

Yes..take heed, and do NOT carry them with you.
It is not required now.
Six years ago I had my wallet stolen, including my Green Card.
Oh..dear..what a head-ache.
One whole year monitoring my credit with the three credit agencies..as the creep used my credit cards.
Then I had to replace my Social Security card and Driver's licence.
However, the Green card was the stinger..almost $200. to replace it, and a lot of paperwork to fill in.
I lost it in Houston, Texas, home to thousands of illegal immigrants...so I'm sure it eventually made it's way onto the black-market, and sold for mega-bucks...Grrr.!!!

Treat those Green cards like Gold..!!
