I guess thats one more thing to be thankful for over here in the US. Spent many years dodging the detector van, and would still be doing so if i'd not been rescued by Mrs S
edited to make link clicky

I dunno. $200 a year for decent TV? A lot better value than you get over here, I reckon.
Bought a nice TV at Comet once.
A couple of months later, I get a letter from TVLA telling me I'm running an unlicensed TV and need to buy a license immediately.
Wrote back and told them that we already had one (gave the name of the landlord) and never heard from them again.
Bit cheeky that they get this information from the retailer but fair enough I suppose. On reflection, the UK TV license back then was great value for money. Cable TV is complete shite.

A-bloody-men I would pay $500 a year just not to have this utter dog shite that passes as tv even broadcast....
Can't say much about UK TV, but I do notice quite a big difference between US and Canadian (Ottawa) TV.
When we go to San Diego for our winter vacation I find the selection of programing poor. But then I suspect that like those of you that compare the difference between US and UK TV, it may be that we get used to our local programing.
Iv'e been watching Bleak House on PBS and we also have a local channel TVO that shows many excellent North American and British programs.
I'm glad we don't have to pay for a TV licence, but glad that they do in the UK ( to support BBC). I'm sure there is some real crap shows in the UK as well.
yep, there is some crap in the uk, but unlike here, it's not seperated by even more! lol
Wife and I tend to watch everything via HTPC now, at least that way we don't see any adverts at all. still crap programs, lol, but they finish quicker without the "you must have" adverts

We don't watch TV movies live. I record most except those shown on Canadian Bravo that usually has a segment of adds half way through the movie.
I have seen quite a change in TV shows in the 40+ years we have been here and most of the prime time programs are aimed at a younger audience. I have never watch any reality programs and most of the Sit-coms have little appeal to my age group. This is also reflected in movies in recent years. To many special effects and little good acting or inteligent scripts.
I suspect older Brits in the UK feel the same about their present day TV. We all tend to think that things are getting worse whether we are in the UK or on this side of the pond. You just need to be find the good programing amongst the bad. One thing for sure we have lots of choice.
Brit tv has always been imo far superior than any shite you get in the networks , havnt watched movies on the commercial supported channels for many years .
so many adds and so much cut out it hardly seems the same film .
Sport is the main thing that gets my attention on the networks/commercial base tv and a few selective programming on channels like espn . the nfl channel , health ,a&e , discoveery ,court tv etc my main choice of programming is with the premiums IFC , HBO , etc .
there again network tv is* FREE * and like everything else in life you only get what you pay for .
