I want a widescreen HD tv what with the world cup coming up soon. I have up to about 2,200 us dollars to spend. I have no idea what is good and the array of plasma, LCD and projection tvs is overwhelming.

So its not a case of being lazy, just wanted to see if I could benefit from the research, opinion and experience of anyone here.
Is the World Cup being shown in HD?
(fair play to you Moo in any case wink )
If you want to be able to hook up a PC to it in the future, make sure you get a DVI input rather than a D-SUB or even worse, just an S-Video.
Looking myself right now.

This one looks good:
Samsung DLP

You can get it cheaper on Amazon. Shipping is about half the price on Amazon too. These prices are about half what you'd pay at Best Buy or Circuit City so they must have overstock.

LCD is ok but the dead pixels thing annoys me. We have them go out on monitors and TVs at work and you can't get them replaced unless more than 5-7 are dead. The displays looks stupid with pixels that are the wrong colour.
Wow, that looks effing brill. Its a bit more than I had originally planned but what the heck, if I can get shipped to Canada I might go for it.

And, yes all the WC games are going to be shown on HD on ABC ESPN and ESPN II, unfortunately, it comes with American announcers.

For us up here, TSN and Sportsnet haven't made an announcement yet, but I hope they’ll broadcast them all in HD. At least we get the British commentators.
Not sure about the freebie DVD player you get with that Tiger Direct Samsung but the remote is supposed to be pretty good. I just bought the cheaper, Harmony 360 and it works very nicely.

The last multi-function remote I had was fine if I was using it but crap for anyone else - they didn't know how to turn on all the different boxes but the Harmony has basic buttons like "Watch a movie", "Play Xbox 360" and "Watch TV" so any idiot can figure it out. You can download all the codes for your different remotes from the internet as it comes with a USB cable.

I like that TV and unless something better comes along in the next month or two, I'm thinking of snapping one up.
We just bought a HDTV with HD Comcast upgrade box. Its awesome, pity there aren't more HD programmes, but I'm sure it wont be long
Costco special

What are these type like in the day time or with ordinary telly.

with standard cable they are not very good Moo.
Right now, not many of the dlp/lcd sets are, certainly not in that price range.
I know they are not in vouge right now, but you really can't beat a tube set?
I make and sell home theatre PCs and my demo room uses a Sony 34" widescreen, and a $7K DLP projector, and all but two people have said they think the Sony has more impact with HiDef and is miles ahead on standard cable.
problem with this sort of Q is that everyone has a different opinion, mainly because everyone has different criteria.
Take a trip to your bestbuys and circuit citys and look at the sets, If you can go to somewhere a little nore upmarket as well, they usually set up the TVs better(best buy crank up the brightness and colour to make it look "good").
Don't be in any rush to part with 2K for a TV! It's a big purchase, most new sets will have Dvi, so you won't need to worry too much about that.

Cheers for the advice. Two grand is a lot of spendies so as long as I have my set, HD cable and a PVR by June for the World Cup, I'll be okay.

I agree that CRT has the best picture but it has other issues like units being heavy, especially as you increase the screen diameter and the geometry of the display can be messy.

DLP has issues that are still being worked on - Samsung have new, improved models out in April that address some of the things like rainbow effect, although not everyone is capable of seeing that little glitch anyway.

I liked that unit I mentioned above but further research suggests it may suffer from lag with consoles so I'll hold on to my money for now and look again in April. That TV does have a GAME mode but it restricts you to 480p which seems a waste when you have a 1080p TV and a console that outputs 720P native.

I'm going to follow vapochilled's advice and wait a while - still time from when the new year units come out and the World Cup. Also, the prices on current units will take a further nose dive.
Tsk. You boys have obviously not been reading Viz regularly.

Don't waste money on expensive large television sets evil marketing ploys want to sell you.

Simply move your sofa 2 feet away from your 13" television. Or get a better pair of glasses.
This is the one we bought late last summer and it's brilliant

PS. If you don't already know you can hack many DVD players to make them regionless so you can watch UK DVDs on them.
