Colombians turned pedigree puppies into drug couriers by surgically implanting them with packets of liquid heroin, US authorities said tonight.

Ten puppies were rescued during a 2004 raid on a farm in Colombia, the US Drug Enforcement Administration said, as it announced arrests in the two-year investigation.

A veterinarian had stitched a total of 3kg of heroin into the bellies of six pups. *Three of them later died from infection after the drugs were removed.*

The surviving dogs “are still alive and well, we’re told”, said John Gilbride, head of the DEA’s New York office.

DEA investigators said they believed the Medellin, Colombia-based ring used the puppies and other methods to conceal millions of dollars in heroin on commercial flights into New York City for distribution throughout the US East Coast.

It was unclear how many dogs were used in the scheme, nor did investigators know their fate once they arrived on US soil, Gilbride said.

“I think it’s outrageous and heinous that they’d use small, innocent puppies in this way,” Gilbride said. “It just demonstrates what lengths drugs dealers will go to to get drugs into the country.”

Recent raids in Colombia resulted in more than 20 arrests; another 10 suspects were in custody in New York, Florida and North Carolina. About 24kg of heroin was seized.

But not to go off topic, it is a particularly cruel thing to do.

Saw this on the news last night. Agree with hubby, it's really gross, so much worse than forcing some pregnant woman or teenage girl to do the job.
But yeah, ter right, it's not acceptable. Strange though how the women who get caught in these situations always volunteered. roll

Awful yes, but is this really the most disgusting thing you've heard lately? The maiming and killing of Iraqi children by American soldiers is less disgusting?

I would have thought the use of humans as mule - a long standing practice - was marginally more concerning than puppies... perhaps it depends on how cute the puppies are.

Humans have a say in the matter.

Less than you realize. Most drug mules are the victims of exploitation and/or oppression.

I would have thought that the use of mules as drug carriers would have been highly suspicious, especially in the cramped conditions of economy class.

I quess it depends on which adjective you use .
to me the use of helpless pupies and putting htem thou so much pain is more disgusting to me than using human mules but thats just my opinion.
any words thats discribe the act mentioned as objectionable , repugnent etc would do just as well

glad we all agree the act is dispicable whichever words and some of us have a better command of the english language than others we are all basically on the same page ..
