Here's another laughably poor "best ever" list in NME - made by the staff no less.

http//news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=125142006

So according to NME the Arctic Monkeys album is better than Revolver by the Beatles even though it's only been available in the stores for 3 days. 3 days!!! And not just better, but 4 albums better. It's been knocking around online for months and the general opinion seemed to be "so what was the fuss about this then?" It's alright, but 5th best ever - have we been at the crystal meth again? Here's the list-

1 The Stones Roses - The Stone Roses
2 The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
3 Oasis - Definitely Maybe
4 The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
5 The Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am
6 Blur - Modern Life Is Rubbish
7 Pulp - Different Class
8 The Clash - London Calling
9 The Beatles - Revolver
10 The Libertines - Up The Bracket

The Libertines? Ahead of every other British record ever made they pick The Libertines? Now, I like some stuff that most people would think sounds like an alpaca molesting a duck, but I wouldn't argue it's the greatest british album ever. And I must say it is refreshing that there's no Radiohead on there at all - whereas Q Magazine managed to put 5 of them in there top 15 - but considering those included it seems a tad weird. I'm convinced that the list must have a Verve record, and maybe a Manics record but both were sacrificed so that not all the records came out over a 5 year period.

Any thoughts?
Modern Life is Rubbish? WTF? Don't get me wrong, I love Blur but their second album really wasn't all that good.

I only really agree with the Pistols and the Clash... the rest of those suck donkey balls.
Yep sorry this list is mostly crap.

what's missing

Rolling Stones - 40 licks
The Jam - Setting sons
Oasis - What's The Story Morning Glory (far more powerful than D.M.)
Radiohead - Ok Computer

whats okay

Blur - yep no problem
Pulp - yep okay with that
Clash - Yep thats good too

Whats crap

Sex pistols - saying their good because they swear on interviews does not make them good, its like saying that being tall makes you clever

Stone Roses - Oh for f**ks sake
the libertines - ponces
arctic monkeys - who are they exactly

You know this is a really crap list, I think we could all do much better than this gobsh*te
The Stone Roses number one? The Stone Fucking Roses!!?? After all the fuss over Fools Gold died down, I thought everyone had realised that they were crap.

I agree with the Smiths, Oasis, Pistols, The Clash and The Beatles being up there but the rest of them are just beyond my comprehension.

Suprised that there's not one out of Zeppelin, Sabbath or Motorhead in there. Not that I'm a huge fan of any of them but any one of their albums blow the Libertines out of the water.

Also agree with above that The Jam should be in there for defo's and I would also suggest Madness or The Specials; album names escape me though.

And what about Pink Floyd? Pompous arses most the time but The Wall is an incredible album.

And then there's the Small Faces (was it called Ogdens Nutgone Flake?), The Who's Quadraphenia, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John, Stereophonics, etc. and they pick a band that no ones ever heard of. Jesus Fucking H Christ.
I agree with the Roses being number one. It's better than all that shite from the 1960s.
Visit the Anti-Beatles Homepage http//www.areddy.net/beatles_suck/ I agree, far too much emphasis on "old music" is bad for your mental health, but then so is reading the NME.
This is typical of journalism. A band that the vast majority of people had never heard of 3 months ago has supposedly a better album than bands that have remained popular for 40 years.

One missing from here for me Band on the Run by Wings. Also Cold Rush of Blood to the Head by Coldplay is a challenger.

I hear you Vegas. :!:

The NME is a complete load of pretensious crap.

It's fallen mighty hard since the days of Julie Burchill and Tony Parsons. Then it was the most influential music paper in the world. It was on the cusp of a musical and cultural revolution, and sold 800,000 copies a week (even though in those days it competed for readers with Sounds and Melody Maker, both now defunct).

Today it's lucky if it sells 80,000 copies. Its has about as much influence as a wet cabbage. Kerramg has more influence these days.

Ian Brown did some jail time in Strangeways a few years ago so there was a definate danger of him being a pretty boy in the dark.....

errr..... aint 'cha doing the same thing Annie?
and erm, I have The Stone Roses LP hid somewhere in my collection

Thats what this list is a *load of old bollocks *
How can a group that was around for only a few years and had no musical talent what so ever beat out the outstanding offering of the Beatles . Zeppelin , Moodyblues , Pink Floyd , Queen , the stones and others , then in the 80s groups like the clash ,the police etc ,were far superior then most of the carbage put out today .
So seeing as we are all so clear that this list is crap, what would your top albums ever be then. But as we aren't professionals like the good folks at NME, let's say we choose albums that aren't exclusively British, and how's about we allow ourselves 25 instead of 10. I'd go with -

1. Peter Gabriel - 3 (Melt) - 1980
2. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - 1998
3. Slint - Spiderland - 1989
4. Led Zeppelin - III - 1970
5. Truly - Fast Stories From Kid Coma - 1995
6. Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain - 1959
7. Godspeed You Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O. - 2002
8. The Beatles - Revolver - 1966
9. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound - 1973
10. Joy Division - Closer - 1980
11. The Olivia Tremor Control - Dusk At Cubist Castle - 1996
12. Sonic Youth - Dirty - 1992
13. Serge Gainsbourg - L'Ettonanat Serge Gainsbourg - 1961
