My husband is from Barnsley, S Yorks - not far from Sheffield (duh, you probably know exactly where Barnsley is!). Your not too far from us here either, we live in Minneapolis, MN.

Alright Stylus? Welcome aboard mate.
Hi Stylus
We used to live in St Paul, MN and we have a good friend living in Milwaukee.
Hey there,
Welcome, from Lancs but right on the border, Colne, not too far from Sheffield.
Welcome aboard Graham -
Stick around we'll help you through the homesickness bit.
I don't care how many years we're all here, I still have trouble around Christmas time missing my family. And I've been over here yonkers years, that inteprets to 30+ years. wink
I call my parents on Christmas day and have a good old chinwag.
Again, welcome aboard, we're in Florida.
Thankyou all for the warm welcome... yes this is a tough time, I have my mum and daughter back home but we make it easier by keeping in touch regularly, in fact every week with my mum and as often as I can catch my daughter, 19 and in her second year of uni. so you know how that is!

Yup I know Barnsley well, used to deliver printing there every week in my past life. How do you manage to understand what a Barnsley lad is saying?
Thanks VegasRudeBoy and Scramble

Well if you are 'right' on the border I can talk to you then ) I have heard of Colne but I can't place it at the moment. Over the Pennines and far away.

Thanks... in a way it is good to know that I should not be getting over homesickness... at first I thought I would but now I realise I will have to live with it. Help from anyone who understands from being in it as it were will be much appreciated. There are times it is overwealming and I think I just must go back, then times it is just bad.
Thanks...
Graham
Ayup Stylus - I have a fondness for South Yorkshire folk grin My parents grew up in Doncaster and I had grandparents there until recently. Welcome aboard.
In my case homesickness has faded over time (11 years), to be replaced by a surprising realisation that I would no longer want to live in the UK. I think having 3 teenagers who are totally into American ways and see their futures here (or at least not in the UK) has helped.

It's funny, that's the first question people ask me when if they know anything about Barnsley! It was hard to understand him at first. I met him when I went to England to visit some friends that lived there. He didn't talk to me much when I first met him but he asked for the phone number where I was staying. He called me the next day and we were on the phone for like an hour - I had to listen really hard and ask him to repeat things many times because I could not understand him! He's been over here for almost 2 years and I think his accent has softened a little now. I'm used to it ofcourse but I still have to interpret for others some times!
What part of Wisconsin are you living in? Do you get back home very often? My husband does get really really homesick at times too - although he does feel like we have a better life here than we would in England. The friends that I met my husband through are from Pontefract and they have since moved to Minneapolis too so that's nice for him to have a buddy here and they can relate to eachother.
:)

Bloody Sheffield lol
/only place more ghetto than Skegness is bloody Sheffield
Hello ClementineD... We have good friends in Bridlington, England, she is from Lincoln Nebraska he from Barnsley too. Sheffield is only about 25 miles from Barnsley but there is a big difference in accent. A heavy Sheffield accent is difficult too, I don't have one of those either though... grew up in Scarborough with a Scottish dad so I sound a strange mix at times. I will do anything to hang on to it though!
We are living in Sheboygan... that's about an hour north of Milwaukee on Lake Michigan. I love the lake... in fact what really endears me to this place is that I always wanted to move back to Scarborough and live on the east coast again, watch sunrises over the sea and walkon the sand. And I can do that here... the only odd thing to me is to see ducks riding waves. To a Brit. that really is an odd sight!
VegasRudeBoy.... oh dear there's always one isn't there... wink
Where are you from... Mablethorpe? lol
Hi Stylus, welcome.
Hubby and I both hail from Sheffield too. Hubby originally Stannington and myself from Chapeltown.
Been over here 6 years now and live in Ohio.
Sorry to hear that you are homesick. Most of us are probably feeling the same thing with the time of year and all.
Mandy
VegasRudeBoy.... oh dear there's always one isn't there...
Where are you from... Mablethorpe?
Er... Not quite but my mum comes from Mabo. The fond memories of knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers with badly-spelt tattoos and ill-fitting shellsuits still wake me screaming sometimes.

By 'eck good northern humour eh... after the laugh that comment gave me vegas we should be friends for life!
Hi Mandy, yes I know this time has a lot to do with it, it will subside again I know. I am from Wales, a little village (as was) south east of Sheffield, near to Aston. Years before I lived near Stradbroke in Sheffield, then Coal Aston near Dronfield.
Are you both here working?
Graham
Hubby is working....I am a stay at home mum through having to be, not wanting to be.
Sometimes homesickness never really goes away.... people miss family....the ways they are used to back home and friends.....we suffer from homesickness in varying degrees....sometimes a lots, sometimes not at all. it all depends on what is happening here and how you are coping with it.
Mandy
