While I agree that there has been a long and interesting argument surrounding the form of government that fits a particular place and time, the more salient discussion is what form of democracy is now best, given contextual factors.
The term democracy is a wide and varied concept and is open to many variants and interpretations.
Personally, the obsession of supporting an idea of a nation state is fundamentally flawed. I think that given the rapid advances in communication and transportation technology democracy can, and probably ought to, operate at much more local and cultural level. The move away from large centralized power blocs is now more beneficial than harmful .

whilst any body being killed is bad. In the larger scale its pretty small compared to other conflicts that have happened (good or bad).
What one person calls freedom maybe somebody else hell. It really only comes down to power and greed on all parts.

It's interesting that a whole host of experts on the Middle East point to the recognition of the nation state within the region as one of the major causes of problems there. We in the West do view the area in very post-WW2 terms imposing our own rules and boundaries upon people who don't care for them. It is almost ironic that in trying to "civilise" the region all we did was export nationalism, fascism and communism. Then we spent the next 50 years arguing that we should sell various countries weapons "otherwise the Russians will."
