I watched The Santa Clause last night and in it the adults remember the exact moment they knew Santa Claus wasn't real. I don't recall that epiphany. Do you? And as an aside (because I came across the gallery below) are your kids petrified of Santa?

I would say from experiance some lids are (or ultra shy ) as one parent put it .
im my disguise as santa i pose with pets /kids for pics at to benefit local charities .
Many pets usually bigger size dogs are pertified of santa and sulk behind there owners with there tail between there legs .
Some kids when the perants approach me with the view to having pics taken just stand and cry and if possible run away .
There could reasons for this regarding the pets , the mass of hair , the smell of the wig and costume or just a fair of being in a public place and being handled by a stranger with another stranger pooking a camera in there face .
dogs after all are sensitive .
W ith the kids i cant fiqure it out one dad bought his daugher aged 6 to see me as that is what she requested and the moment she saw me unlooked her hand from her daddy crasp and run and hid in the corner of the store ...
WHO KNOWS ????
Long time since ive had young kids around . perhaps some perants with young ones can give a answer to that sort of behavour ?
Was it because i threatened to lock them up in a closet and NOT give them a present if they didnt behave  JJ FOLKS
I'd be scared of that santa!
I'd be even more scared of JohnA, with his spelling, I'd probably get a brick instead of a truck lol

...and back to the original question! I remember distinctly the moment I realised Father Christmas was my dad dressed up! I was 10 and my dad would put on this squeeky voice when he talked to us in the early hours of Christmas morning (with my mum giggling outside the bedroom door) and I told him he sounded a bit like my dad. My brother caught him out by spotting his signet ring one year that he had forgotten to take off...
My dad had a mask but it was jollier and certainly not THAT frightening!

And he wouldn't come down the chimney either, he'd just throw it through the window.
He's the only Santa I know with a gun rack on his sled.
I think that it was not an instantaneous thing, Suspicion, denial , stronger suspicion, pretend so the presents don't dry up, confession, relief that presents continue.
That Santa in that photo would scare anyone!
I caught my dad coming up the stairs with pillow cases filled with toys, I waited til he got to the top of the stairs and quickly asked where his costume was.
He nearly fell backwards... wink
I still got my toys though. grin
OMG! That Santa looks like an extra from the 'Chucky' movies! o
Yes, I remember the exact moment I found out Santa was not real. I was seven and I wanted a piano for Christmas and didn't get one. I was heartbroken so mum and dad explained to me that Santa wasn't real and that they bought me my presents and couldn't afford a piano. I don't know what I was more heartbroken about after that point wink
My older two were unsure of Santa and to be honest, we never made a big thing of going to visit Santa anyway. the youngest was absolutely petrified! But it wasn't just Santa (and it wouldn't surprise me if this is usual for other children who didn't like Santa), it was anyone dressed up with make-up, masks or beards covering their faces. Even men with natural beards that weren't even fully grown! Why - I have no idea. He has a very vivid imagination that when he was young he just couldn't control. We couldn't take him to see clowns, Postman Pat, Santa, even our friend if he hadn't shaved! roll I must admit, I could never force a child to go and visit Santa and because mine were not really interested and one totally petrified, we would avoid the shopping malls at this time of year as much as possible )
Kids are all wise about it now, and know that it's just a load of tosh really. As kids you were made to believe that there is only one santa, and then you see all these parades and conventions with loads of santas.
When our kid was young, we got asked why there were so many santas in a shopping plaza we were in? That was a hard one to explain at the time.
I was scared of Father Christmas as a kid
And that pic would scare me for life
After all I was told about not talking to or keeping away from strangers and yet this man from the north pole (or where ever he came from) would be in a dark room in the corner of the Co-op in a red suit with a wig and an obvious fake beard, where he would have kids sit on his knee and tell him all what they want for Christmas, where he offered to deliver kids these presents by breaking into their houses coming down the chimney or using a 'magic key' of some kind, drinking sherry and mince pies; and all this..... as long as they behaved :???:
He scared me to death
As a kid adult I kind of like the Robot Santa from Futurama

A robot created to decide who's been naughty and who's been nice, distributing presents accordingly. Unfortunately his standards were set too high, and he consequently judges everyone to be naughty, leading him to go on violent rampages across Earth every Xmas. He resides in his fortress on Neptune and theoretically uses Neptunians as labor for toy manufacture.
If that was true I'd be running for my life every year!!
Kids are all wise about it now,
Just how old do you think my children are
Young children are no different today than when time began. If a child is scared, he/she is scared.
What I do find amazing is when a child is obviously scared of Santa that a parent still insists on 'making' the child sit on Santa's lap just so they can have a photograph. What message is that sending to the child.

Ben...by that statement, I meant most kids know santa is not real now, and they can't be arsed with all the pretentions things. There is a thread going about how they are trying to stop kids from sitting on santas lap in Australia, there is a good reason for that, and I can see where they are coming from.
