Me and the other half would love to replace our vids as we can't use them here.

It's dead easy to hack most dvd players to play Brit DVDs as well as American ones, then you could import them.
search for DVD and HACK to find the many many threads about how to do this. Or PM me. Damn, you're so close you could just pop round for a cuppa.....
sony SLV-ED7 multi format VCR, cheap, I have one. I use it to copy tape to DVD, but you could just use it as intended.
Is it really worth it, though? VCR is so dated and so vulnerable. Unless you're so broke you can't afford DVDs from the UK, surely better to buy a cheap multi-region and hack it (less than $40 these days) then buy the dvds from the UK?
Well I build and sell HTPCs that play all regions, I only got the VCR for transfering what home movies we had.

I bought a Phillips DVP642 early this year for this purpose, converted it with a simply code punch from the remote, not sure if it's ok to put the web site link here though. This player works beautifully with UK region, very smooth. Some players are known to jump as the extra frames are removed during conversion.
I brought a pile of DVD's home from my last trip to England... and my mum (bless her) sends me cricket dvd's to sate my passion!
