The 1,000th execution since the death penalty was reinstated is likely to come as soon as Wednesday, when Robin Lovitt is set to die in Virginia for fatally stabbing a man with scissors during a pool hall robbery.
The US is with many other notable countries that still legally kill their citizens.

I think we have the death penalty in Oregon but it is never requested any more by prosecutors.
I would say here’s to a thousand more, serial rapists, murderers, pedophiles and the like deserve a lot worse in my mind. Shame we live in country with a corrupt and damaged legal system where your chance of getting off is directly related to the size of your bank account. That’s not saying much for all those other places in the world if the so called leader of the free world can sentence innocent people to death………
No DP in Michigan. Which is good.
Does it really deter people from murder?
Who cares, not much chance of them doing it again thou wink

RICHMOND, Va. - Gov. Mark R. Warner granted clemency Tuesday to a convicted killer who would have been the 1,000th person executed in the United States since the Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume in 1976.

Robin Lovitt's death sentence was commuted to life in prison.
Lovitt, 42, was set to be executed by injection Wednesday night for stabbing a man to death with a pair of scissors during a pool-hall robbery in 1998.
Lovitt's lawyers, who include former independent counsel Kenneth Star, and anti-death penalty advocates had argued that his life should be spared because a court clerk illegally destroyed the bloody scissors and other evidence, preventing DNA testing that they said could exonerate him.
The 1,000th execution is now scheduled for Friday in North Carolina, where Kenneth Lee Boyd is slated to die for killing his estranged wife and her father.
The nation's 999th execution since capital punishment resumed a generation ago took place Tuesday morning, when Ohio put to death John Hicks, who strangled his mother-in-law and suffocated his 5-year-old stepdaughter to cover up the crime.

I'm in a red state, so naturally we like to execute people.
At last Governor Warner has stopped signing off people to be killed. It's a really really good day for Virginia.
And please note, I am not interested in them 'getting off'. Lovitt will spend the rest of his life behind bars. As it should be.
In Illinois we recently had a clearout of death row. Now they are convicting people again so executions should resume in a few years.
The death penalty criterias need to changed, but I am definately for it. How a guy can kill someone with scissors and get the death penalty while (last I heard) Green River killer sits in prison for life I will never understand. Those who have hunted people as game to commit murder or sex crimes repeatedly are beyond the point of rehabilation, if they didn't get the message the first or second time incarcerated and continue to commit premediated mureder or sex crimes they should be executed. Why pay tax money for someone to essentially sit and die in prison.
I am not for the death penalty for every single rapist pediophile or murder, just the ones that spend 8-10 years in the pokey get out and do it again. The first conviction maybe he is really innocent.....or may change his life around, but when released continues their menace to society ways well he didn't get the message in the first sentence chances are he is a repeat offender(guilty no mistaking innocence) and would continue for the rest of his (or her) life to harm innocent honest people.
Everyone has a parent and NO parent should ever have to answer the door to a police officer because some shmuck who "didn't get enough attention as a child" had to fullfill there mentally perverse desire to murder. If you are a parent and was satisfied with "poor johnny" getting life instead of a bolt of electricity for harming your child I don't know what to tell you.
I know of not one criminal who was committing a crime and thought "oh I'm going to get caught", no one ever plans on getting caught, therefore the death penalty to cut down on crime is a joke. The death penalty is for closure to the victims families, we tend to forget them in these arguments. There are people today who have bedrooms in their home where there dad mom child or grandmother once rested. Their shoes are still in the closet, sunglasses on the dresser and dirty laundry in the hamper. They left that day just like all of us and some homicidal maniac that should of been executed years before enters that families life.
My friend Brandy who used to live across the street from me as a child. We grew up and went our seperate ways my sisters kept in touch with her. Well Brandy got involved with a guy who she did not know had a rape conviction and a whole different conviction of attempted murder against another girlfriend. She kicked him out only to have him return kick the door in stab her 20+ times and ultimately suffocate her with a plastic bag over her head. Her 6&8 year old sons were with grandma that night thank god, they are beautiful boys. Her mom nor sons deserve a lifetime of no daughter or mom because some sorry sick piece of shit can't control his desires. It would be an honor to flip the switch which is a vacation compared to what I'd like to do if I had hold of him. He has been charged with capital and goes to trial first of the year, doesn't do her boys alot of good they will never get to feel their mothers warmth or hear her voice again. She was a good mom and person.
I hold life as sacred and a gift, it is in the protection of innocent human life that I prefer to eliminate those who harm the innocent ones.
The death penalty MAY BE an option where the evidence is so positive that there is no doubt about the crime.
Many are convicted on biased evidence and then there is the colour problem. Blacks are more likely to be convicted that whites.
Most of us are aware that the death penalty doesn't deter potential killers. So it comes down to revenge or pay back to satisfy the victims families.
Considering that a substantial number of Death Row inmates have been subsequently proved innocent, I believe that it should be taken off the books in the US.

Any proof to this? Any statistics that show more black people convicted of murder are given the death penalty compared to convicted white people?
