In the essence of wanting to be able to cook my girl something British when I visit her I cooked (successfully I might add) Toad-in-the-hole for Mum and Dad for dinner today.

Next up Shepherds Pie! grin
good work fella.

Try a curry if you want to cook her something truely british.
Good work mate, but watch it, it can get addictive and you end up making fancy sauces etc.

Back in my time there, curry came from Indian restaurants, I suppose from this and other threads, that it is, now, ubiquitous.
Lovely thought, but choose your dishes carefully -it's hard to find British style sausages over here and it doesn't taste the same with the American ones. Shepherds pie will be easier to find the ingredients for when you're here. Curry may be tricky as in some areas it's very hard to get hold of the spices you need. You could bring those with you, though -unlike the sausages.

......yes, and be very careful or the next thing you know you'll be on here holding cookery clinics while whizzing off round the world hobnobbing with the likes of Schumi. roll ;) lol
Surely they've heard of curry over there, aren't there any Indian take-a-ways? Good point on the sausages thanks Monster. Maybe Shepherds Pie will be met with less suspicion. Just part of the uncertainty is I suck at cooking as it is, without knowing what to cook neutral

erm... no, not as a rule......

Yes there are Indian restaurants here, but are few and far between.
Most spices can be bought here, just don't expect to walk in a supermarket and pick up what YOU would know as curry powder.

Well, my ghast has been flabbered

Try a beef wellington, beef in pastry, somehow that's really popular over here. Meat and pastry. Also, try fruit pies, very popular. Now, the biggie here in California's sillycon valley at the mo is a man who can make a really good dessert.
eg.
Large double chocolate chip muffin, split in half, heated in the microwave for a short time until it's hot, topped with white and dark chocolate ice creams, from Godiva, topped with raspberries, fresh or frozen, topped with chocolate shavings and whipped cream. It's astonisjing to look at and tastes extremely good. However i find one dessert between two is more than enough.
Chocolate dipped strawberries are good too. You can buy the huge stemmed strawberries over here. You just melt chocolate, dip them and put them on greaseproof paper to harden. Serve with wine and candlelight.
For a really British thing learn how to make a Yorkshire pudding without the 3 gallons of cream and 2 sticks of butter and half a dozen eggs they use over here. When you tell her it tastes that good has hardly any fat and can be eaten sweet or savory she'll love you forever.
American food generally sucks. It's loaded with unnecessary additives, sugar, salt, fat.
Best of luck and hoping she isn't vegan wink

Depends on where you live. There are more and more in our area as the years go on! We have a great Indian restaurant in Delaware, that also does takeaway (next to a British tea room - where you can buy a tin of mushy peas for $2.50 , and down the road from a British pub ) .

Good work on the cooking.. now, try a nice steak and ale pie. There's a really good recipe floating around on this forum!

There's like 7 in Vegas... plus the local store carries Pataks, basmati and naan bread.

/as long as you are in a city, you should be fine.

Damn skippy, large Indian population in Bay area means quality curries appear at the drop of the hat, me and the missus indulge as often as our digestion allows.

Just googled restaurants in Gloucester VA...

...and there's not a lot there. Couple of pizza places, a barbeque place and a couple of generic "restaurants". Have you considered bringing some Pataks sauce with you?

If you get stuck while you're here, holla. There's enough of us on here to offer live support while you're slaving over a hot stove.
Cook her an egg beefburger and chips, nothing more British than that.
