Sadly I have fallen into the trap of renting movies based on the "two thumbs up" scale. Which both Ebert and Roeper say is stupid anyway. Anyhoo, the other day I watched a movie with my wife that was supposed to be good but I thought was dreadful. Absolute dross. So I was wondering if you have fave/hated movies that are supposed to be the opposite.
The alleged good movie was Chicago. I's een some before and got bored and turned it off. My wife hadn't really seen it. It was crap. Richard Gere? Awful. Catherine Zeta Jones? Fair enough. Renee Zellwegger? Please someone clue me in as to why she is considered even average? She's not a good actress in my opinion.
The alleged bad movie for me was The Day After Tomorrow. Alot of the reviews I read really slammed it. But I got around to watching properly anyway. What was the big deal? Sure it wasn't the greatest movie ever but it was worth watching. I read so much about how silly it was - well it is a movie! Duh!
How's about you?
Yikes, I've avoided Chicago like crazy. The other I don't know. I'll ask him indoors.
Have you tried Jet Lag. Jean Renoir, with hair, very odd but hugely attractive and sexy, and Juliet brioche, OK. whatever her name is. Gentle comedy and enjoyable.

That movie got onto the Republican hitlist - it draws attention (albeit sensationally) to global warming and what MAY lay in store for us if we continue being so wasteful with energy. It is no different though to some bible-thumper threatening us with what MAY lay in store for us if we don't do as they say.
Personally, I found it a good little adventure with a number of stings in the tail - Mexico's border patrol turning US citizens away was an inspired plot development.
I like some really dumb movies, amongst the good ones, including "A Night at the Roxbury" and I actually own "Pee-Wee Herman's Big Adventure", really only because a couple of the jokes in it are hilarious. Rest of the film is just junk.
Thumbs up is only on opinion thats what it is an opinion a guide to what the film may mean to you thats alL .
I like musicals i though chicago was okay .
Havnt seen the others movies mentioned here .
look at the list of movies i like in a previous post not many of you will have the same ones on your top ten list .

Where d'you think the name Mr Bungle comes from?

I caught that movie on IFC the other day. I thought it was good but then it does have Juliette Binoche in it. (A Brioche is quote "A round, exceptionally rich bun with fluted sides and a charming little topknot". Ok I'll give you that one)
Agree with you about Chicago, what was that all about? I also think Renee Zellweger is totally over rated, saw her in Cold Mountain recently, what a load of thigh-slapping panto pastiche she was in that too.
So there 8)
I avoided Chicago like the plague, I thought it was highly suspect seeing as three of the worst actors on the planet were in the film (Gere, Zeta-Jones and Zelwegger) Day After Tomorrow I thought was quite rip-roaring fun. Manhattan flooded, Royal family freezes...marvellous!!

Oh - I thought you were a fan of the porn movie "Sharon's Sex Party"

Is that the Mike Patten Mr Bungle? If so, they were a prime case of a thumbs down when the music press tried to tell us it was a thumbs up.
