Just treated myself to a lovely new pair of boots to keep me warm this winter. When the tax was added to the shipping from Ann Taylor Loft I thought, 'Oh, they're in California" Today i got the shipping and tracking number and find they're in Illinois.
So does illinois now collect tax for California? Am i paying Illinois taxes? Isn't the internet free of tax? Did I fall asleep and wake up in a new cyber highway where everything gets taxed? What's happening? Anyone?

If Anne Taylor does business in your state, then they have to collect sales taxes, even on stuff sent from out of state.

Nope..as Michael correctly stated...

One *other* thing to remember, (as you're in business too) you cannot shop or buy stuff for resale or use out of state to avoid paying sales tax, or else, should you be audited you could get zapped for avoiding state sales tax and you'll end up being penalised for all the state tax you owe and a penalty...

So you need to make a clear distinction between what you purchase for personal use and what you purchase for your business. Otherwise, should get audited, then they will whammo you for ALL potential sales tax on everything you bought regardless of whether it was for personal or business use.

Thus, I do not buy anything out of state anymore...

Andrew :)

What's sales tax? wink
I didn't think you had winter. Enjoy the boots though!

Ok, but I guess the main thing is they have a physical presence here. That was the bit that threw me. The local stores had no idea what I was asking for, and as with a recent purchase from Target, i got $10.00 off the local retail price, which covered the tax and shipping, I was a bit taken aback a being asked for both.
Boots and beads, yeah I guess even the local gov. admin might notice a difference between the two.
I don't think I pay Tax with Amazon, but to be honest I haven't noticed, I'm more concerned with the free shipping.
As far as I have been informed by local gov. i only collect taxes on in state purchases, not out of state ones.
I'm right there, aren't I?

exits left muttering like old lady in anti Ahnold campaign, ' money, money, money, they're all the same, politicians, corporations, they just want money, money, .. ad infinitum

That is correct. But just make sure anything you buy for your business that you pay the sales tax when you buy (thus, no need to buy out of state to avoid paying sales tax) otherwise you have to reconcile all your out of state purchases and asses the state tax you would've paid on the entire amount.....

My beads are from Bali, but apparently I have to hit a limit before I become taxable. It's not very clear, but I keep all paperwork. I mean it, All of it.

No tax on clothes in NJ.

But to clarify, if your run a business, it doesn't matter. You have to pay or declare and pay the sales when you file your returns at the end of the year. If you don't, you could land in deep doodoo..

In fact, as a consumer, you're supposed to do this too, but not many folks do....
