of course the danger is that it could be used by women who are just pissed off at their partners..not to say I blame them, men are pretty awful creatures.

From the article
"Ehlers, who showed off a prototype on Wednesday, said women had tried it for comfort and it had been tested on a plastic male model but not yet on a live man."
...can I get a "duh"? How poor and hungry would you need to be to volunteer for that? "Excuse me sir, we're conducting a clinical test here, would you mind slipping your John Thomas into this meat grinder?"
/the picture in the article is scary too

South africa seems to be pretty good at crime busting inventions, a few years ago
i read a story about a guy that invented a device due to the alarming rise in car
jackings idea ....basically it was a flamethrower shock that mounted to the
underside of the vehicle at either side, and if you were about to be carjacked
[and were quick enough] you just pressed the button and flames shot out
about 3ft [i think] and hey presto......toasted... dunno if the idea took off, never
really heard much of it after that........just the thought or hearing of the idea
probably reduced the crime rate enormously.

Isn't one of the fatal flaw with this invention that the inventor assumes the women know when they are going to get raped.
I'm guessing that most rapes occur in the small hours of the evening and the assailant is often known to the women. Perhaps they were on a date together or met at a social event. So I'm curious as to when the woman is supposed to put 'rapex' on. Do you wear it all the time or only when you meet somone for a date? If you feel the need to wear rapex when meeting a new fella perhaps you shouldn't be dating him at all.
Also after - after a few drinks and passion is rising - the women might forget she was wearing it.

You'd have trouble talking about it afterwards... try explaining the razor cuts on your tongue to the doctor

One major flaw with this is that it doesn't prevent the rape until penetration, which is after most of the trauma has occured.
Whether it would prevent rape in the long term is to be seen.

I think some of us here are overlooking the obvious. This invention is to protect the ladies from gang rape. Pretty much like the Indian lady who was gang raped at the instigation of the male tribal leaders.
To say she has a choice is to lower yourself to the so called Christian charities acting on behalf of America who say she should say no as she is held down by several guys whilst she is raped.
This is the oldest joke I know concerning this subject, best done by Richard Prior, who got tired of the white on black rape in this country.
To trap the male dick and walk it to the nearest police staion, of course , in the early days, he used to say, and what would they do but bust her for prostitution.
Sex should not be used as a weapon. But if it is, we as women should be allowed to fight back and maim a man for lfe, so that any other woman would know who he is.

I think gang rape might be one of the situations where this would be dangerous -if the first to try is maimed, the others might be inclined to revenge?
I would see it as a device to protect against single unknown rapists -which is also not a wholly uncommon problem in that area of the world. But how would you predict when you're more likely to be attacked by one man and when by a gang.
Plus the penetration issue still exists.
Chastity belts are the only sure answer. Booby-trapped knickers.

To be honest, I think a handgun would be better than this.

Yeah, but you wouldn't know who he is until it gets to a trousers down kind of situation...

Absolutely. The NRA likes to highlight news items that echo this sentiment but you have to look very hard in the mainstream press to verify the stories. Armed citizens legally defending themselves does not seem to be a politically correct story, or so it appears.
When I was looking at concealed carry courses, I saw some designated for women only and I think they may have been subsidised by the NRA as well so definitely affordable.
