LONDON (AFP) - Middlesbrough's Portuguese defender Abel Xavier has been suspended from all football by world governing body FIFA after failing a drugs test, the English Premiership club announced.

The 32-year-old, who joined Boro earlier this season, returned a positive urine sample after Boro's UEFA Cup match against Xanthi on September 29.

He must now await the outcome of a FIFA disciplinary investigation before learning his fate which could be a lengthy ban should he be found guilty of a drugs offence.

A statement on the club website said it "does not feel it is in a position to make any comment at this time".

The former Liverpool and Everton player has also starred for the Portuguese national team, Benfica and Galatasaray.

It is not known what banned substance Xavier has tested positive for, but Xavier is expected to make a statement Tuesday.

Middlesbrough drew 0-0 in Xanthi, a result which took them through to the UEFA Cup group stage 2-0 on aggregate.

Xavier has since played in the 3-2 Premiership win at Aston Villa, but he was not involved in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Portsmouth.

There is nothing personal about my request for you to cite your source. It is illegal to use people's words without their permission/crediting them (as well as being extreme bad manners). We have been through this before, many times. Britnet cannot and will not condone such activity. Future posts without proper credit to the source will be removed.

As for subtlety, no-one could ever accuse you of that. Failure to comprehend it, yes. Reread/read properly and you'll see I used the phrase "your own question" which indicates that I realize that was your attempt at a comment. FYI, a question is not an opinion. Even if you can spell rhetorical.

Well I'd like to point the finger at Rio Ferdinand....I though it was fishy that he forgot to attend a drugs test.
