All day I've been feeling miserable. Could have a lot to do with the ghastly wet weather - rain for eight days straight now, it's no longer even funny to tease the natives that this is nothing to England. It might just stop sometime tomorrow but since the Oracle is away at a college reunion I am here with only the dog to talk to
I've spent hours this week trying to choose lighting that the Oracle likes and the electrician says will fit for our home addition. Right now I feel like just attaching lightbulbs to wires and leaving it at that (I wish they'd do that here anyway, like in the UK - it'd make my life easier!). Today's challenges: 1. Find track lighting with only four lights, which must have coloured glass shades and be able to point directly downwards and 2. find wall sconces (for reading lamps) which are decorative, adjustable, tasteful, functional and which will fit over a bed. I found one that I considered passable (ie adjustable but not as ugly as most) and the Oracle hates them. There's a lot to be said for lightbulbs on wires right now.
It's not my favourite day anyway. Eighteen years ago today my mum died. Seventeen years ago today we of Kent were surveying the damage done by the Storm of 1987 (aka The Hurricane). Two years ago today the dog died (as the kids keep reminding me).
So I hope you are all having a happier day.
;)
Kentgirl - Sorry to hear you are having such a bad day, hope it gets better......
By contrast my day so far is going very well.........to start with it's my birthday so always a good day if I can forget that I am yet another year older.
Also, sold my old car back in the UK this morning which means everything is now in progress for me to pick up my shiny new Porsche when I get back to the UK in 2 weeks time.
Plus right now I'm in FL working and there are worse places to be, so off out on my company for a slap up meal at Del Frisco's tonight followed by a weekend acting like a kid again with my co-worker as we have some free Disney passes.
What a day you are having, KG.
I know what you mean about the rain. Over a week, over a foot and it still keeps coming. We have been very fortunate so far and I can't tell you how grateful I am that Dad put in new drainage and drainpipes in, but the end of the rain is not here yet! How has everyone else done? flooded basements, flooded homes? NJ has been hit really hard again. Hubby will be struggling to get home tonight and all the after school activities were cancelled because of the flooding on the roads. There are a couple of really bad spots and some roads that are completely closed off in places. We have tried to work out an alternative route home for the other half but it's going to take a heck of a lot longer than usual. Never mind, as you say, KG, the rain is supposed to stop tomorrow for a couple of days. More rain on Tuesday roll wink
I've been busy trying to write some papers for college. Needed to do the food shopping so popped out early this morning to get that done - shop was sooooooo quiet I actually enjoyed doing the shopping this week! lol
Sorry to hear your having a bad day KG. This rain is awful and its still in our basement!!
Zed
I hear there is a state of emergency in NJ now. I hope that all of you up there don't have it too tough. Sorry about your basement Zed, is there a lot of standing water in there?
Sorry to hear about your bad day KG. Tell Mr Kenty to find his own lamps if he's that fussy.
I'm not having a great day either. My husbands uncle died earlier this morning. His Mum has now lost two sisters and a brother in the past five months or so. I have absolutely no idea what to say to her.
Your MIL is clearly having a really awful day dianey. I'm not surprised you don't know what to say to her. The same thing happened to my great-aunt in 1962-63; she had dedicated her life to caring for five siblings - they never married and all lived together their whole lives, then suddenly between October 1962 and April 1963 she lost her three remaining brothers one by one, having already lost a brother and a sister in the 1950's. She was left all alone at 72, never having left the family home.
(Just to explain Out of seven children, only one left home, married and had children - my grandfather. All the rest stayed in the family home - the brothers handing their pay packets to their two sisters who kept the house.)
Sorry to hear about your flooding Zed - that must be horrible to deal with - especially for those who have to deal with it on a regular basis.
Ah well.... tomorrow's the 15th, so it might look better.
I know what you mean about the weather. I've been visiting friends in Connecticut and its been raining ever since I got here.
Sorry you are feeling down but try drinking all day long, there's phuck all else to do in the this weather.
We've had a gorgeous day here. But if it makes you feel any better, I have a cake to decorate, present to wrap, house to tidy, games to set up, goody bags to fill.... and it's 10.30 and I'm knackered and from 8.30 am tomorrow we will have just less than an hour in the house (when we need to eat lunch) before the party starts. hmmmmm. Wouldn't swap it for your rain, though. If it were raining like that here, I'd say "fuck it" and go jump in some puddles D
oh and happy birthday uuf, I had remembered, but didn't get round to posting it this morning and now you beat me to it!
Kentgirl - sorry to hear you've had a bad day, a lot of emotions go with this date for you I see. Hang in there tomorrow will be brighter.
Dianey, sorry to hear of your husbands relative passing. Sounds like you've had a rough time of it too. It's hard to know what to say to anyone when they've lost a loved one, but so many in a short time would be totally depressing.
I was in a bummer mood yesterday, shut myself in the house and wouldn't answer the phones when my girlfriends called. Guess one of them realised what I was doing. She came over and nearly banged my door down, and of course the dobie barked like hell so I had to answer the door.
So kicked myself in the butt last night and went to the movies and saw 'In her shoes' it was a pretty good chic flick. Daughter treated me to dinner as well.
Then dragged my butt out of the house this morning bright and early to go to yard sales.
It's 1130 and just finished icing a german choc cake for a birthday party tomorrow.
I'm tired out now, and forgotten why I was so bummed yesterday.
I got a blinking sun burn today too, I'll send some sun your way as I'm looking forward to some cooler weather.
So come on Kentgirl, break out the crafts, paints etc and get busy. Have you done any shows lately? Or any new paintings?
Go for Moos idea. I like that one lol. But watch out for the day after and if its still raining will make you feel worse lol.
I know what you mean about the weather. I've been visiting friends in Connecticut and its been raining ever since I got here.
Sorry you are feeling down but try drinking all day long, there's all else to do in the this weather.
You mean to tell me, you came all the way over this way and you didn't even bother to let me know! You could have popped in for a cup of tea
Zed, how bad is your basement?
Hope everyone is feeling a little chirpier today and that the party goes well, Monster :)
It's still chucking it down here, but I'm feeling better after a good night's sleep, thanks. The kids and I are having a cleaning purge - getting rid of mess tends to make things look better anyway.
I have neither the time nor space for painting, Ginger, but am sketching constantly - room plans for the addition! Perhaps once the building is done and my trusty assistant ( ;) ) Shirl the Girl and I have finished with the interior decorating, perhaps then there will be time for my art.
Ben - Its drying out... The trouble started last Sunday as the washing machine was letting water back in. The landlord had to get the town out as the pipe to the street was blocked and forcing water into the house - urgh. To top it off the house is at the bottom of a hill and the water comes up from the ground and there is no outlet pipe. So we've had all that dirty water and shit to deal with whilst not being able to use down stairs. Have been running de-humidifiers all week and the landlords response is he'll take $100 of the rent. His going to be lucky if he gets a bloody dime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All this plus being 25 weeks pregnant - his lucky my foot isn't stuck up his arse!!!!!!
Zed
Oh Zed, you poor thing. I know a lot of people here have been having problems with their basement and I remember when we lived in NJ the problems of living further down a hill.
I hope you manage to get it sorted soon.
