Two blokes are going to deliver a new cooker to my house tomorrow. Deliver involves carting it into my kitchen and plugging it in. So, do I tip? And if so, how much?
God I hate this tipping lark roll
Is the company charging you a delivery fee?
I wouldn't tip, they are on the payroll of the store, and if it's got to be set up, i.e. attached to waterlines etc. the company usually charges you about $85.00 an hour
jmho 8)
It's a delivery charge of $50 which you can get back with the mail in rebate thingy. Setting it up just means plugging it in, it's electric.
No need to tip for this sort of stuff Lizzi...
It's not even considered by those delivering tbh. When we have had stuff of this nature delivered I may offer a soda or water (as a social thing) and that's about it...
Keep the tipping for restaurants, bars and taxi's (that's all I do).
Andrew )
In the past, I haven't tipped for this type of delivery. It's been my experience it wasn't expected. I usually offer a hot/cold drink though, and that offer is usually accepted. smile
I concur. No tip. Offer a drink, and if you feel they worked hard and fast, maybe a plate of cookies or something, or a pack to take with them.
We've had some brilliant service here and these guys are just doing what they're paid to do, but often they don't stop to eat and live on gas station coffees, so these things are more appreciated than you'd think -especially as it doesn't seem to be expected, unlike in the UK where it goes with out sayng you put the kettle on the minute a worker arrives.
/bugger that was a long and awkward sentence! I need to revisit my grammar books! lol
Thanks guys. I'll get out the old mrcoffee machine then. grin
Why do you feel you need to tip there stated a price for hte service (delivery and set up ) you agreed and paid it unless they do anything extra like cleaning out your attic ot weeding your yard there is no tip required ,
Americans have taken this tiping custom to a *its mine wether i earn it or not * attitude .. .
its given for good service OVER and above that which is paid for PERIOD .

Never mind the grammer - How many words per minute

far too many, but I cheat and only use about five fingers and I still look at the keyboard. I've got my real no-looking-down-using-all-10-fingers touch-typing up to about 35wpm average, but it's easier and faster to do it the old-fashioned computer-geek way!
Why do you feel you need to tip
It's what living here is all about John, frankly if it moves, tip it  Hairdresser, shampooer for god's sake, person who brings rollaways to your hotel room, shuttle drivers, valet parkers, Ben & Jerrys ice cream servers, and the one I particularly hate, tipping the chap that pours you a drink whilst you sit at the bar.
Totally moronic.
Took me years to get comfortable with the whole tipping thing. In my first month I insisted on tipping the mechanic 15% of a $1500 bill! Wish I could revisit and claim it back now I'm older and wiser!!
me thinks some people have been had.....
tipping has never bothered me, but it's all (AFAIAK) based on the level of service I get.
We had some crappy service at a restaurant in SF, and we left three bucks in pennies to let them know why....
The waiter came out of the place and was hurling abuse at us because he knew why we did what we did.
Andrew :)

I don't agree, tipping is not all across the board, and I think it's lack of understanding of how things work here. Generally speaking the the only places you need to tip are the ones I mentioned. Posties can't take gifts and such because they deliver your mail, and likewise down the line.
Now, leaving a little something at christmas for the garbage guys doesn't hurt, and helps when you need to get some crap out of your garage and they're not supposed to take it.
There are other ways to show gratitude for good service, take a name, and write to their boss if you feel you've been given above the board service. i do this all the time, and sometimes, they throw you a little something for bothering...

I'll agree with this. After the first time someone did this for me at work, I've taken the trouble to do it for others, something ashamedly, I didn't do before.
